Honda Cars plans
third manufacturing plant
in Gujarat to beat
Hyundai

A recent report on Live Mint
newspaper proposes that Honda
Cars India is planning an
investment of Rs.4,000 crore to
build an automobile
manufacturing plant at Vithalapur in Gujarat. Honda’s third factory in
the country (following the
establishments in Greater Noida
and Rajasthan that leave it with a
capacity of 240k cars per annum
today) would have an annual capacity of 100k-125k cars a year. In February this year, Honda
Motorcycles and Scooters India Pvt.
Ltd said it had acquired 100
hectares of land in Vithalapur for a new INR 1,100-crore production
unit that comes on stream in 2016. The third plant would make Honda the second largest company (by volume) in India. According to people privy to the
carmaker’s plans, the company is
looking to buy 150 hectares of
private land in Vithalapur-Manpur
area near Mehsana. A facility to
manufacture components is also on the cards, as per a proposal
submitted by the company to the
government. It would become the
second Japanese company to invest
in this region as Suzuki has
planned a facility there to contract manufacture cars to Maruti. If the third plant is commissioned,
Honda would become the second
largest company (by volumes) after
Maruti Suzuki, the report says.
Though Hyundai and Renault-
Nissan have factories of over 400k unit/annum capacities, a good
share of the produce is still
exported. The thought of adding capacity is
in tune with Honda’s current
performance. In a sluggish market,
Honda sold 135k units in 2013-14
compared with 73,483 units for
the same period last year, more than doubling its market share
from 2.76% to 5.37%. It targets to
sell 3 lakh cars by 2016-17 and if
achieved, would have exhausted
capacities at both plants,
expansion included.

Nivea to set up first plant in
India at Sanand PTI Jun 23, 2014, 05.52PM IST AHMEDABAD: Global skin care giant Nivea today announced to set up its first ever
manufacturing plant in India at Sanand near here. Apart from the manufacturing
facility, Nivea India, an affiliate
of Germany-based Beiersdorf
AG, will also set up its R&D
center at the Sanand-based
factory, which will focus on innovations for Indian
consumers as well as other markets, said Managing Director of Nivea India, Rakshit
Hargave, here today during the
ground-breaking ceremony of
the factory. "The GIDC (Gujarat Industrial
Development Corporation)
alloted us 72,000 sq meters of
land at Sanand to set up our
first manufacturing unit as well
as R&D center in India. The plant will be operational by
March 31, 2015 with the initial
production capacity of more
than 50 million units of skin
and personal care products,"
said Hargave. He, however, did not share the
quantum of investment for the
plant. Hargave was accompanied by
several top executives of
Beiersdorf AG, including
chairman and supervisory
board of Beiersdorf AG
Reinhard Pollath and executive board member Stefan De
Loecker. On the question why they
selected Gujarat for their first
plant in India, Loecker said that
the state provides favourable
environment to grow. "Gujarat provides an
environment to grow. The local
authorities, such as GIDC,
extended great support and
help to realise our dream.
Besides, this state has well- established universities, which
will help us in hiring skilled
manpower," said Loecker. Nivea hopes to cut their
imports from other countries
after the plant becomes
operational. "Nivea has been present in the
Indian market since 1930s. At
present, we import almost 60
per cent of our products. With
this facility, our imports will be
reduced. It will also help us in providing more affordable
products to Indian consumers,"
Hargave added. The factory will also include a
research & development (R&D)
center which will focus on
innovations especially for
Indian consumer needs and
and other markets, the company said in a statement
later in the day. Nivea's product range in India includes bathcare, body care,
deodrants, face care, men's
care and lip care.

August car launches Report – Hyundai looks at
second factory for India
on the wake of new
products Posted on Aug 26 2014 - 1:28pm IST HMIL’s existing plant has
a capacity of 7 lakhs units
per annum. A report on the Economic
Times states that Hyundai
Motor India Limited (HMIL)
is closely looking at a
second factory to increase
its production volume. The Korean car maker plans to
launch two new cars every
year, and will in fact, enter
the hotly contested
compact SUV and MPV
segments as well. Hyundai will enter the compact SUV segment next year with the ix25. HMIL’s MD and CEO, Mr. B S
Seo, told the newspaper
that the company’s
existing facility in Chennai
still has capacity to keep
them going for a while. It produces 6.8 lakh units
every year, which can be
stretched to 7 lakh units
should the need arise. When asked about a
second factory, Mr. Seo said
that the company was
“looking at it very closely”.
The newspaper reports that
HMIL is looking at other states in India for its
second manufacturing
unit, including Gujarat
which is becoming a
favorite place for car
makers. While Mr. Seo declined to comment on
this matter, he said that
HMIL has the capacity to
construct a factory at a fast
pace once the decision was
made. Also see: Hyundai ix25 snapped testing in India with EcoSport and Duster Given that HMIL is planning
on entering voluminous
segments with their
compact SUV and MPV, it
needs to question if the
current plant would be capable of satisfying
production demands.
