Toronto-LAX fell through?
I don't think there was ever meant to be a YYZ-LAX-SYD service. I think it was YVR-LAX-SYD. Anyway apparently AC figured that there is too much competition on the SYD-LAX/LAX-SYD route so they opted for a direct service. Much better IMO.

Yes there was a YYZ-LAX-SYD service planned and AFAIK it's still planned. I believe the hold up is regulatory issues on the Australian end. I think both the Americans and the Canadians have already given their regulatory approval. Could be wrong though.

I will lose all faith in aviation in Victoria if it's YYZ-LAX-SYD and not YYZ-LAX-MEL. Imagine having TWO daily AC flights into SYD!! Enough is enough!

Doesnt JL has two flights a day out of sydney? 744 to Tokyo and a 743 to Osaka? or did they scrap that route already? :dunno:

^^ It could have been JALways(sort of the budget arm of JL)? But I'm pretty sure that they cancelled all the flights into Aus if i'm not mistaken? I know that they definitely cancelled out of BNE!

JALWays pulled out of the Australia-Osaka route and was replaced by Jetstar Australia International.

JAL still flies Tokyo-Australia. (NRT-SYD (daily), NRT-BNE (few times a week))

Some minor mistakes... Qantas743

Try 1x daily... with extra 343 services in Summer

Qantas743 said:

1x Daily (744) with extra services on weekend with 73H

Qantas743 said:

SYD-JNB is 5x weekly. IMO, this route would not be able to sustain daily operations and there simply isn't enough 744s to ops daily (add to the fact First can't be offered once weekly).

Qantas743 said:
3 x daily QF - NRT flights (333/743/744)
SYD-NRT is 2x daily most times, non-stop 333 and 763 via CNS. Some days there's an extra non-stop flight (333). 743s will ops SYD-NRT irregularly over the next few months due to 333 mx and heavy loads.

Qantas743 said:
1 x daily QF - SFO flight (744)
SYD-SFO is still 5x weekly and not yet daily due to fleet requirements (simply not enough 744s).

Qantas743 said:
1 x daily QF - HNL flight (743)
QF mainline flies SYD-HNL 3x weekly with 767s

Qantas743 said:
1 x daily QF - JFK flight (744)
QF107/QF10late is not yet daily - this occurs (changes to daily) later on in August, IIRC. SYD-JFK is currently 5x weekly.

744s SYD-ICN, 333s for BNE-ICN.

FYI, JL fly NRT-BNE-NRT daily with 744s (sometimes 742/744).

^^ I was sure that JALways scraped there NRT-BNE-NRT route? could be mistaken though?

Nope, JALWays only flew KIX-BNE-SYD-KIX.

744s SYD-ICN, 333s for BNE-ICN.
There is a mix of 333s and 744s on the ICN-SYD route. Have seen KE 333s numerous times in Sydney.

All the other stuff, I stand corrected!

Btw, why is there such poor serivces between MEL and NRT? I'm very surprised that JL or ANA don't fly to MEL as I'm sure there would be demand from tourism etc.

Qantas743, in the past perhaps, but presently, all SYD-ICN-SYD services are operated by 747-400 equipment.

With regards to MEL-NRT... well obviously there isn't the demand. It wouldn't be possible for JAL/ANA to fill a 744 (regularly, irregular charters yes) with passengers on a service just to MEL, so would require a triangulated service with BNE/CNS/SYD. Full service ANA/JAL services to MEL would not work, but with the right (smaller, say 787) aircraft, a ANA/JAL LCC offshoot could develop MEL-NRT/KIX.

As a side note, it's my understanding Toyota makes good use of MEL-NRT

Australia-Japan (in particular MEL-NRT) is very low-yielding and one of Qantas' worst performing destination countries/routes (along with New Caledonia and Indonesia). If it was not possible for QF to have a JAL codeshare on MEL-NRT services, you'd lose your Tokyo services quick smart (it would bleed even more massive amounts of money - only SYD would be marginal without a JAL codeshare; MEL/CNS/PER would would bleed massive amounts of $$$).

Gulf Air to scrap Sydney service

Gulf Air will drop three destinations and may replace three planes it owns with leased aircraft to cut costs, the state-owned company's vice chairman said on Wednesday.

The leased aircraft would replace three of nine Boeing 767s the airline, owned by the governments of Bahrain and Oman, plans to drop from the fleet, Mahmood al-Kooheji said in an interview. The fleet currently has 34 planes.

"We are considering leasing three additional medium size Airbus airplanes... We save money on standardised equipment and processes. Everything will be unified," Kooheji told Reuters.

They would be leased at current market rates of about $200,000 to $250,000 per month. Negotiations are likely to end in two months, he said.

The firm is scrapping its Dublin, Johannesburg, and Sydney services, he said.

This comes as no surprise... especially since there was alot of recent speculation. Shame to see another carrier leave SYD.
