This is definitely worth the $2.20 for the S.M.H..

The DVD, titled "The Big Picture" has a duration of almost 70 mins with 4 main chapters.

1) Sydney in Time: In its different sub-chapters, there is great footage of Sydney's skyline including flyovers and from the harbour, of old and very new & the skyline of now from the bridge climb. Also included are historical accounts, great pics and footage around the city, Harbour Bridge & Opera House constructions and openings. The other sub-chapters include disasters eg. The 1977 Granville train disaster, muliculturalism and Sydney's sporting heritage. BTW It's hosted by Peter FitzSimons LOL

2) Pictures in Music: Once again, pics of old and new of Sydney. You get a choice of which music you want to play while watching; "Serac" by Sydney ensemble Decoder Ring or music from The Sydney Symphony Orchestra. :)

3) Herald Front Pages: Self-explanatory.

4) Channel 7 - My City of Sydney: Basically Channel 7 promos from years gone by, once again including historical shots of Sydney. The highlight though is the 1969 promo that Channel 7 used to use until the mid-70s for closing @ around midnight or 1:00AM, before TV stations aired 24/7. It features Tommy Leonetti singing "My City of Sydney" with wonderful shots of The Harbour, Kings Cross neons, Hyde Park and the skyline @ Circular Quay - it's unrecognisable!! North Sydney's skyline looks more like Burwood now LOL

Not exactly, but the type of historical images you will see....

Dammit i may of missed out.

God i hate that international crusier terminal as seen in the second pic. Didn't realise it's been around for so long. Its so intrusive on the rocks.

It's been renovated twice in the last 20 years. I don't think the building itself is such a problem. The first renovation revealed a light and interesting structure - great for the ginger beers amongst us - but it also looked like a ship in my mind. A bit of this was lost with the recent second renovation - which was more about trends rather than design - but it's still a nice structure.

BUT, i agree totally, it doesn't do much for the Rocks at all. By today's standards it is a "nice" building but in the very wrong place (it'd never get built today). But don't forget Sydney Harbour - of which the Ocean Terminal is right in the middle - was a working harbour for almost 200 years before the Rocks was a cutesy little tourist trap. And personally, i love it when a ship is in. I love Sydney harbour being a working harbour. Better than a Swiss lake or French Riviera mega-dollar resort.

This is why it is oh-so worth blocking out the Rocks - he he...

(all pics by moi :) )

Not only renovated, but basically rebuilt in 1988. I think it was pretty much a big shed back in the 60s from any pics I've seen.

tayser, read your PMs.

BTW For those that retrieve a copy, let us know what you think.

Damn, I had planned to get that DVD with the paper this weekend but completely forgot! It's Wednesday here, so I'm assuming it's too late now! ;) Always love seeing historical pictures of Sydney though! (And any pictures of it for that matter).

The Fairfax office down @ Darling Park had plenty of copies left yesterday.
Or just give them a ring. :)
I'll be getting mine in the mail.
A hardcover book that's related was sitting in a 2nd hand bookshop window near my place for 40 smackers. Greeeeat old pics of Sydney included of course.
