Former prime minister Paul Keating has called for Sydney to be made the nation's capital.

In a speech on the future of Sydney Harbour last night, Mr Keating flagged the potential of the Garden Island naval base site to house Federal Parliament.

Mr Keating told ABC Radio in Sydney that Prime Minister John Howard has already effectively moved the Government to Sydney.

"Strange but true - the Government operates now out of a little office building in Philip Street, Sydney," he said.

"That's where Cabinet meets, except when Parliament's sitting.
I think this is a bit pie in the sky. I'm not sure we'd want to go through what (West) Germany did when it moved it's capital from Bonn to Berlin.

say what you will about the wisdom/insanity of actually moving the capitol.
but you have to admit that a well conceived gov't complex on garden island would be cool aesthetically speaking.

a few papers are reporting this. i think it was more about keating thinking that something really special should sit on garden island. he does seem a little bi-polar in the articles, maybe he's losing it.

Sounds like he's wandered from one topic to another. Started talking about the future of Sydney Harbour and ended up going on about the government.

Strangely a spokeswoman of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce used the APEC summit as a reason why Sydney should be capital. I would have thought that, if anything, the APEC summit will show why Sydney should not be the capital.

Sure I'll tell you. Mostly Canberra. According to the annual report of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Cabinet met 93 times in 2005-06. Only once in Melbourne and once in Sydney:-

Cabinet support
The Cabinet is the government's key decision making body and is chaired by the Prime Minister. Cabinet and its committees meet regularly, usually in the Cabinet Suite in Parliament House.
PM&C schedules and provides secretariat support for Cabinet and committee meetings. As part of this, we:

check that documents lodged with us comply with relevant requirements
arrange secure distribution of meeting papers and outcomes
coordinate Cabinet briefings to the Prime Minister from our policy advice areas, and
maintain the records of Cabinet.
Details of trends in services to Cabinet and other decision makers are provided in Table 6.1.

Our Cabinet secretariat workload in 2005–06 involved:

93 meetings of the Cabinet and its committees, including one meeting in Sydney and one in Melbourne,

Why you would be silly enough to believe anything Keating would say is beyond me.

Oh my, Paul Keating has aged terribly. perhaps he is loosing his marbles, causing him to talk shit.
What does one do with Canberra if the capital is transferred? Personally, I like the idea of Canberra being the capital, & it was made so, so Melbourne & Sydney wouldnt bitch & start a war over who was the pre eminent city.

From my understanding Sydney has enough problems with it's population and infrastructure currently, so why bother. Not to mention the billions it would cost.
Canberra would turn into a ghost town, lol

I say move Capital to Sydney or NSW independent nation with Sydney as capital. Agree that Sydney is just too different than all other oz cities and needs to be independent.... hehe

How cool though, it would b like europe - you go to QLD, VIC, WA - they are all different countries...

I love Paul Keating - did you know... his daughter was married to a muslim - not just any muslim, but Rashid Strik ( i think thats his name ) - anyway, he is the dude in Jessica simpsons video clip - public affair - and he was in headland?
