Kaubamaja ("Department Store") is the most iconic department store (as the name says) in Tallinn and probably the whole country. The original one was opened in Tallinn, but they also have a store in Tartu.
The original building was opened in 1960.
Over time, several annexes have been added to the building, like this one in 1973.
The most infamous addition is probably the gallery to neighbouring Viru keskus, angering Tallinners since 2004.

Now AS Tallinna Kaubamaja is planning to tear the whole complex down and replace it with a more modern and larger one. For that, an architectural competition was arranged, with the 15 entries published today. You can take a look at them and vote for your favourite at uus.kaubamaja.ee.
