Workers at Tampa's largest ship yard could build a $150 million arctic supply ship, according to a Louisiana newspaper. Edison Chouest Offshore won a contract with Shell Oil and will perform the work at Tampa Ship or a new ship yard under construction in Houma, La., the Houma Daily Comet reported Thursday. The decision hinges on whether negotiations work out for Houma's port to build a massive dry dock, financed in part through state incentives, spokesman Lonnie Thibodeaux told the newspaper. The project would employ 1,000 workers and last two years, he said. Edison Chouest, based in Galliano, La., bought the land lease from Tampa Shipbuilding & Repair at the Port of Tampa late last year.

Sounds "fishy" to me. It looks like they are just using Tampa to get the state monies to finance the construction of a new dry dock in LA.

Maybe Tampa could end up being the bargaining chip the shipping business uses to get a better deal. Just like St. Pete was before the Rays, "you better cut us a better deal or no ships for you."
