Portuguese airliner, TAP Portugal has expanded its routes to include Sao Tome & Principe, opening up an alternative destination for Ghanaians holiday revelers and businessmen.

TAP Portugal, the flag carrier of Portugal, has also scaled up its operations to the country as it begun daily flights from Accra to Lisbon from July 1, with onward connection to 75 destinations in 34 countries across the globe.

The airline is also starting three-flights- a- week direct service between Accra, Ghana and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The São Tomé and Príncipe flights will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays; departing Accra at 17:10 local time and arriving at São Tomé and Príncipe at 19:00.

The return flights will depart São Tomé and Príncipe at 20:00 and arrive in Accra at 21:00.

The aviation industry is among the country’s fastest-growing economic sectors, with annual growth in traffic of around 10 percent in the past decade.

In 2013, passenger traffic on the 28 airlines flying to Accra was 1.7million, equaling the traffic in 2012.

Mr. Dionisio Barum, TAP Portugal’s Head of African Operations explained: “What is contributing to the Accra traffic is not only from the Portuguese market but mainly from Europe, where the UK market is very strong.

“Ghanaians are spread all over Europe, and all those countries are increasingly demanding our products. This is because we are increasing capacity and increasing seats on our offering to Ghana.”

Mr. Barum was optimistic that the airline’s new flights “between Accra and São Tomé and Príncipe will promote tourism and bilateral relations between the two countries.”

The increase in the airline’s operations has been made possible because of the addition to TAP's fleet of six new aircraft: two A330s and four from the A320 family.

These aircraft, according to the airline, will enable an extra 900 flights and provide space for 180,000 more passengers

The airline is a member of the prestigious Star Alliance.
