THE head of Tasmania’s peak tourism body does not understand why the Federal Government is not “falling over itself” to get on board the Cradle Mountain cable car train.

ELEANOR HALL: To Tasmania now and there it is forget health and education. The hot topic for today in the state election campaign is the Liberals' announcement that they'll build a cable car to the top of Mount Wellington in Hobart. But Government MPs say they thought of the idea first and point to Labor's plan to build a funicular railway.

I'd prefer the funicular!
I guess it would be more 'fun'...

I gotta admit - this is one topic I'd have NEVER come up with :)
There's been various cable car plans for the Gold Coast Hinterland for a decade. Many more tourists and more likely to be viable, and likely easier to build as resources are nearby. Despite that, still very little progress.
Another proposal in Tasmania: Mount Roland Cableway

What's the actual source here? Is it a decades old article?

The Mt Wellington cable car proposal is a private development and isn't being proposed or built by any government.

The last big news was that the bill to acquire the land from the council (and subsequently lease it on a commercial basis to the cable car company) was passed through parliament with support of both Labor and Liberal parties.
