Tehran trolleybus seems to be out of service now. The catenary on the line to Rah Ahan has been completely dismantled after the service had already been dismissed last year.
Express bus network (BRT) relays on domestically assembled diesel buses (with MAN engines built under license) while 20 year old trolleybusses had been from Czech manufacturer Skoda. With enduring sanctions import of new trolleybuses had become an unresolvable obstacle.

The municipality has put strong emphasis on the expansion on metro network in order to resolve public transport demand of the 15 Million city, with (secondary) surface transport covered by BRT and conventional bus lines (most of them with CNG driven buses). Trolleybus is no longar part of this pattern.

^^ I don't believe sanctions blocked the import of new trolley buses as they are available from Belarussian and Chinese manufacturers. If they can import or build CNG busses then there is no reason they can't import or build electric ones.

Even though there is information about re-opening trolleybus network in Tehran, on friday 10.03.2017 there were no trolleybuses in service.
Bus drivers around Khorasan Square asked about trolleybuses said "no, no" so probably network is shut down again or is closed on fridays.

That's disappointing. I was looking forward to see Trolleys coming back to Tehran. Has anyone heard news about what happened to the project?
