The Orkar Coup

Saturday April 21st: 2340hrs - Sunday April 22 1990

It was a saturday Night and as usual, being a saturday Night, my Dad will not chase us to go to bed. We always gather to watch DBN's "Night Shift Movies". We lived at the top floor of a three storey building in Ijeh Barracks Obalende, just about 500m from Dodan Barracks and Radio Nigeria.
We saw activities around Radio Nigeria and Ikoyi cementary from a vantage position. Buharis Coup, IBB's Coup, The Night Mamman Vasta was executed and Buried, we all saw it. The Day of the Orkar Coup...it was right in front of our Block.

In the course of the movie, my elder brother decided to go take a wee at the balcony instead of the bathroom -because he doesnt want to walk to the outdoor bathroom -. From the balcony, you can also see clearly the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos Island End; As he was peeing, he noticed some set of white mini transit buses (later turned out to be J5 buses used by Orkar and Co), they were so many that they drew his attention. When he came back in to the living room, he told us what he just saw and we thought its one of those things.

Then about 15minutes later, we had some gunshots that sounded like Uzi Manchine Guns. My dad Opened the curtain and saw a flash up in the sky.....being a police man, he immidiately knew those where gun shots but at first thought it was one of the Usual gun shots we hear from time to time. Then the shots became consistent and louder for about 2 hours or so...My dad Immidiately turned on the radio....Not long after came a radio announcement preluded with a marshall song and then came the voice with the phrase ""Fellow Nigerian Citizens," and my dad yelled "its a coup plot! Babangida have been overthrown"

The gun shots died down, not totally but enough for us to be able to sleep till about 7 am :lol: It continued that way and there was an occassional repetition of the broadcast message followed by the marshall song until later in the day;

BATTLE FIELD OBALENDE

Our Barracks was a battle field on that day. Hours Later Federal forces came with reinforcement......

I would have died that day because we thought it was all over after Orkar captured Radio Nigeria and didnt know the Federal forces were coming back for war, so I sneaked out to see what was happening outside the barracks to Obalende Bus Stop, so were so many other people.....then all of a sudden, from no where came a huge blast.....it was a bomb blast from an armoured tank. It was very serious and sporadic gunshots then followed with troops in trucks and land rovers.

We all started running away and I saw people being hit by flying bullets. Already my mum and Dad were worried and couldnt come out because the fighting was so heavy. I had to run and dodge my way for about 600 meters before I finally got home, the moment I flung myself in to the house, it threw the door wide open, I saw everybody were lying on the floor. My dad stood up and welcomed me with about 3 dirty slaps on my face followed by my mum who pounced on me and at the same time was checking over my body to be sure there was no blood or any unknown bullet brush.......the heavy fighting continued for hours until Radio Nigeria and Dodan Barracks was taken back from Orkah.
When Orkar's men found out that they were being over powered, they started running into our barracks and pulling off their unfiroms and throwing ther guns and arms away. So many of them ran into some of our neighbours' houses because they live on the ground floor. They had to start giving them clothes and food and places to hide.

My dad was pretty upset they were not able to dislodge IBB but he was happy after all that we were all well and safe after about 18hrs of fightings.

What happened after IBB took control of State House was another form of intimidation as Soldiers came into the barracks going from flats to rooms and searched for fleeing soldiers

One of the guys that saved IBB was dating my elder sister then. He was one of his Secret Service Aide....He left the service after the coup and relocated to America.....I recently found him on facebook and we've been talking since then

Thats my lil story....now you tell us yours.........Lol

sick story. Wish i had something half as exiting to recount.
interesting story ; but I laughed so hard when you mentioned your family lying on the floor once you opened the door. That was funny (I can only imagine).

I don't have long stories O!. But I have short, foolish memorable stories- like seeing a white man for the first time and other corny stories. I shall tell you guys in a bit.

@ Cistus.....that part would be funny to any body but at the same time frightening...LOL
Very interesting story. It only shows the depravity of military dictatorship. All of them still angling for power, the Buharis and IBBs of this world are the cause of all the problems in the country and will certainly fail.
^^ The Civilians too, the so called "democracy" is not working
Have they fixed the problems Hell no, But made it worse
They haven't made it worse. Life under the military was the worst.

The people that will make things worse are military leaders in civilian clothing like IBB and Buhari.

In 1999 Nigeria was literally at war with all the ethnic clashes, if the country was any worse today, Somali would look give it a run for its money.

I have lived through the military era. Right up to the mess that was Abacha. Comparing the democracy we have now to the military fascist and criminals that held sway in the country is like comparing sleep with death. The civilian government has its issues but it is better than the best the military could offer.

:dunno: what you talking about. Where you in Nigeria in 1999? I was there it wasnt like Somalia a bit.

Two things were persistent in Nigeria Pre 1990; Western Sanctions and Lack of Press Freedom! A lot of people were still talking even though they were being hounded and brutalised. Many of them escaped To the UK and the US.

A firm Central, States and Local Governments were still in place then even though it was a dictatorship!

You cant compare Somalia of Now to Nigeria of pre 1999

You wrong Bro...what we have now is 50times better than the military days.

Democracy takes time to work but we would have gone beyond these level of its infancy if those guys in ABUJA have been behaving themselves. At least now we have the National Assembly to checkmate the Executive but this was not present during the military days.

Now to your point

Abacha may be or may not be a mess, he was wicked and harsh killed people and such, detain people but THAT IS WHAT NIGERIA NEEDS NOW!!! ( or close)
The civilan government offered any thing much worse than the military from economy, corruption, bad govmt policies and all alll all

The civilans keep blaming the military that was 11 years ago, what have the civilians done to repair the damage nothing but make it worse :eek:hno:

Yes democracy takes times to work
But the National Assembly are corrupt people they milk the nation dry 360 house of reps + 109 senators in a year the money they get is enough to reduce poverty in nigeria to a single digit number
The national assembly are bad, too , they do nothing if not put laws that favour them imagine over 1 billion and still asking for 2 bil for constitution reivew when they review the not so important parts (xcept elections)

A bill was sent 2 dem by jonathan on punishment for corrupt ppl to gave harsher one but they the it why? they are corrupt they cant give themselves harde punishment but if it was a military leader the bill would be law, and ibru wouldnt get 18 months it would be worse

dont get it twisted am not defending the military in any way they were bad but the civilians are too, you people are saying the military are bad and the civilians are "good" thats what am arguing here, they are in the same grade with the military
All useless
Well I haven't lived in Nigeria too long to recount such interesting stories as some of you guys but I will share one of my fathers story abi testimony.

In my fathers town there was a new school that opened, and him along with his peers were the first set of students to begin schooling there. One day my father got into a fight with one of his colleagues and their punishment was to clear grass. The headteacher assigned my father his plot, and the other guy his own. They both started clearing grass, when my father stopped and analysed the other guy. He confroted him believing he was leaving the bulk of the work for him to do. they both got into another fight then the Headmaster came again. My father was making mouth for the principle, oga just beat him anyhow eh. My father was thus the first pupil to recieve beating in that school and it was even dished out by the school principle.
Anyways my father was about 12 years old around that time when some men came to his papas house to inform his mother of her husband (my father's father) shock death. Well my grandfather died whilst he was fishing, apparently the boat capsized and he later drowned - I cannot remember if they retrieved the body.
My father is the eldest son in the family but at 12 years old couldn't comprehend and refused to believe his father was dead. Well in Nigeria you know how it is, no free education someone has to provide. Since the provider in the family perished my father dropped out of school and left his uncles home (which was closer to his school) and returned to stay with his mother. After 2 months his principle enquired of him and paid my father a visit. Oga ask him, 'where have you been', but the guy don sabi wetin happen before - in hindsight maybe he wanted my father to grieve privately. He told my father to come back to school. My father said he cannot afford it, the guy said just return. You know wetin? Dis same guy wey give my father priemier beatings in front of whole school before, he kon privately pay for my father's school fees. The guy no be ordinary man, this is the school Principle that just handled my father's funding. From disobediant child to teachers pet lol.

Now the issue of my mother. Prior to the Biafra war, her own father was playing away with some northern girl. Not the ordinary Fatimas and Salmas in Kano, but he was actually having an affair with one of the Emirs daughters (sshh don't tell lol). Well after the attack the Igbos meted out to the majority northern elte, the northerners were obviously planning their counter attack. This was the time they committed the Igbo genocide. My maternal grandfather is a southerner, deltan to be precise so his life was obviously threatened. The Emirs daughter warned my grandfather to return to the south quick quick. Before my grandfather made his journies the lady helped him disguise himself. She barbed his head moro moro but kept the bia bia that had already been growing. She dressed him in some Hausa Kaftan and Hula cap. As my grandfather was thus about escaping, some Hausa men siezed him. They started giving him oral exam lol. You see the Igbos are known for effing up their l's and r's i.e 'Nna I'm velly velly solly' 'reave me arone' - an Igbo lady explained to me it is the anambra Igbos that talk like this actually not all Igbo folks.
Well thankfully my grandpa never had a problem with his speech so he passed his test with flying colours lol. He escaped then for 3 days without food or water he journeyed back to Delta state. By this time his family rendered him dead, so when one skinny beareded old man came crawling from some bushes into their compound they were shocked. They said he really looked hausa lol - oh the irony. Well that was how my grandfather survived the Biafra war, saved by a Fulani princess heroinne :)
