As a continuous growth of population in Bangkok and its vicinity, the land used of the area in the north of Bangkok and its adjacent area of Nonthaburi Province, especially in the west side of the Chao Phraya River, has been rapidly changed due to the large amount of residential community development. This results in an increasing traffic demand in the morning from the residential area on the west side to the employment and educational area on the east side and vice versa situation in the evening. Consequently, this increasing demand results in a congested traffic condition on the existing river crossing bridges especially in the morning peak period
The Commission for the Management of Land Traffic, the summit body who considers the land transportation system of the nation of which the chairman is the Prime Minister, had a resolution on 23rd February 2004 assigning the Department of Rural Roads (DRR) as the Executing Agency for the implementation of the Project.
The Project will be a new river crossing bridge at a location approximately in the middle between two existingbridges, Phra Nang Klao Bridge and Rama V Bridge. The Project is a part of the completed main road linking network developed by the Department of Rural Roads (DRR) in the area on the west side of the river, Wat Nakorn-In Bridge and Connecting Road Construction Project and Pak Kret Bridge and Connecting Road Construction Project.
The Project is located in a jurisdiction area of Muang District in Nonthaburi Province.
The beginning of project locates at Nonthaburi 1 Road that is an existing road on the east side of the Chao Phraya River. Then the route is aligned towards the west direction crossing the river by a bridge including its connected viaduct before connecting to the existing road, Wat Bot Don Phrom-Thanam Nonthaburi Road, on the west side of the river. From this connecting point the route is aligned coinciding with the existing road at an approximate length of 1.7 kilometers to the end of project at Ratcha Phruk Road, a main road network in the north-south direction on the west area of the river. The total length of the Project is as of 4.3 kilometers approximately.
the Project can be classified into 4 main components as shown ;
1. An interchange at Nonthaburi 1 Road and a flyover at Muang Nonthaburi Bypass Road
2. A 6-lane extradosed prestressed concrete bridge of 200 m. main span of which the total length is 460 m.
