Laos’ first theme park set to star in upcoming mixed-use development

Plans to build a commercial, financial and residential township in Laos feature a 60-hectare (148-acre) theme park – the first major amusement attraction in the Southeast Asian country.

The Thakhek Dream World City development – in Thakhek town in the central Laotian province of Khammouane – consists of a 7-hectare (7-acre) financial district, a 300-hectare (741-acre) mixed-use space with offices and residential space, and a 200-hectare (494-acre) retail and tourism space and theme park.

Work on the first phase started this January, with the 7-hectare plot being cleared for construction. The financial district is the first phase of the Akane Development Laos project, with the theme park marking the second phase and luxury residences the third.

Further proposed leisure facilities for the environmentally focused Dream World City include golf resorts, luxury hotels, a 60-storey skyscraper and a “Mountain Walk” cable car network. - See more at: http://www.attractionsmanagement.com/detail.cfm?pagetype=detail&subject=news&CodeID=321082#sthash.fZilGkEG.dpuf

The project is set to invest about US$5 billion with an additional US$3 billion to be spent on the international financial centre and other facilities.

“Overall our plan is to have the project completed in 7-10 years,” he said, adding that any further progress on the project would be released at the end of this month.

According to an initial release from the company, total investment for the three phases is estimated at US$10 billion with the government granting a 75-year concession with a possible 15-year extension.

No, Disneyland Is Not Coming to Laos
Disney Laos was only a nickname for the project, the Thakhek Dream World City, which is unrelated to the multinational Disney entertainment empire.

Good morning. I am new to this site and what caught my attention was this thread about Thakhek Dream World City which I came to know about somewhere late last year.

I would like to know if this development has kicked off or still in planning stages? I can't seem to obtain updated info anywhere else.

Cheers!

Thakhek Dream World City to Begin Construction Soon

(KPL) The Thakhek Dream World City in the Special Economic Zone in Thakhek district, Khammouane Province is scheduled to begin construction soon following a recent memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The signing ceremony of the MoU for the construction of Thakhek Dream World City was held last week among investors including the Akanae Phatthana Lao Company, Dau Tu Xay Dung Cong Nghe Modunlar Block Container, ABT Survey-Design, the Construction and Promotion Agriculture Company and Phu Hung Tin Company.

The Thakhek Dream World City Project, which will consist of two zones, will be built on the Lao side of the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge between Laos’s Khammouane Province and Thailand's Nakhon Phanom Province.

Signatory companies will focus on the development of zone B which is designed to build a five-star hotel with 40 floors, a 65-floor-building for rent and its infrastructure with a total investment of US$250 million.

The investors will develop zone C by building a 4-star hotel with 35 floors, a department store and its infrastructure with a total investment of US$120 million. Construction is expected to be complete in four years.

The Specific Economic Zone in Thakhek district is a priority of the Khammouane province, which focuses on turning 1,035 ha of land in the region of the 3rd Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge into a special economic zone and develop Thakhek district as a modern city to attract both domestic and foreign tourists.
