TMC has been planning an internal rail ring route for the last 2 decades , earlier it was a suburban line now it seems a metro line . In between we also heard about an LRT system , but nothing has gone beyond the newspaper headline.. I hope it will be true this time.. however for some reason on these 2 projects I am pessimistic. I would love to wrong this time ..

TMC plans underground metro route to link old & new Thane

THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is planning an underground route for the internal metro linking the old and new Thane metro stations as the dense localities along the stretch is proving to be a hindrance.
The 2.2km-long underground link will be part of the 29km-long ring route city metro project that will largely run on elevated levels across the city while only this stretch will run below the Naupada ward. The underground stretch will be nearly 12-25m below the ground level and bypass congested sprawls in and around the railway station area. There will be no halts between the two points as the intention is only to provide a faster connect between the two vital transport hubs in the city, said officials.
Officials said care will be taken to ensure the old utility lines of foundations of the old structures are not affected enroute. Officials added that the metro route will otherwise move on the surface or on stilts across the entire city. The final route and depth is being worked out by the Mahametro that will present the detailed project report to the TMC soon.
“The route has to be taken underground as there are several buildings on the internal metro route between the old and the new railway station. Working on the surface will possibly lead to damage to the old structures and so we are exploring the possibility of taking the route underground. A detailed project report, including the underground route, will be presented to the civic body soon,” said a senior official working on the project.
The internal city metro route that will run as a ring route will tentatively have 22 stations. The project was proposed to provide a faster and economic mode of transport to the residents of the city, specially those staying in far off corners like the Ghodbunder Road to reach the old city area and railway station.
Officials said that the route has been aligned with the high capacity mass rapid transit route that has been proposed from Kopri in Thane east. The metro route will run parallel to it from the new Thane station and diverge near the old station area. Sources said that taking the rails over the Central Railway tracks could have possibly delayed the work, thanks to the quantum of mega blocks required to be taken over the high capacity rail corridor.
The city metro will also act as feeder route to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) Wadala- Kasarwadavli metro IV project. In addition, the TMC is likely to simultaneously develop bus stations and proposed pod car boarding points along the 22 metro routes stations, added officials.

Metro ring route to connect distant corners of Thane

In order to boost connectivity via public transport in Thane, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is planning to construct a 29-km-long ring Metro corridor in Thane. The Metro, that will partially run underground, will connect the interiors of the city.

Increasing vehicular density in the city was the main driving force behind the internal city metro route that will run as a ring route. The 29-km-long ring route metro will provide faster and economic mode of transport to the residents of the city, especially those staying in far-off corners.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project is currently in the final stage.

Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MMRC said, "The proposed ring Metro in Thane will connect areas in the city rather than connecting with the neighbourhood cities. We are in the final stages of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same."

Out of the total 29-km-long route, around 26-km will be elevated and the remaining 3-km stretch will be underground considering the traffic congestion near Thane railway station. The underground stretch will be nearly 12-25m below the ground.

The estimated cost of the proposed Thane ring Metro is expected to be around Rs 12,000 crore. The daily ridership of Thane ring Metro is expected to be around 5.76 lakh in 2025 which might go up to around 8.72 lakh passengers by 2045, predicts MMRC.

Apart from this, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has plans to connect Thane with south Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivali along with Vasai and Virar via Metro. Of these, construction work on Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro-4 has started earlier this year.

As per 2011 census, Thane city is the 16th most populated city in the country with a population of 18.9 lakh. The MMRC claimed, Thane has experienced rapid urbanisation during the last few decades. Hence, the projected population for 2025, 2035 and 2045 is expected to be 27.34 lakh, 34.99 lakh and 39.45 lakh respectively.

Mumbai Metro Keeps Thane Close: 29 Km-Long Ring Route To Connect All Parts Of City

Aiming to boost connectivity in Thane, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has planned a 29 km-long partially underground metro corridor that will connect interior parts of the city. One of the main reasons for the decision is the increase in vehicular density in the region.

The detailed project report of the project has reached its final draft and will be submitted soon. DNA quoted Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MMRC as saying, “The proposed ring Metro in Thane will connect areas in the city rather than connecting with the neighbourhood cities. We are in the final stages of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same.”

26 km of the route will be covered through an elevated system and the remaining three km will be underground. This will be near the railway station in Thane, considering the amount of possible traffic congestion around that area. The cost of the project will be Rs 12,000 crore approximately. MMRC expects the ridership to touch 5.76 lakh by 2025.

The Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro line work began earlier this year as a part of the Metro-4 project.

It will always be double track , since this will be a metro system.
I too think so, that they will have single track but two way trains....they can easily cross over at the stations...the basic idea of the ring route is to cut cost of double line network.

Next Metro stop could be Mumbra and Kalwa
TNN | Jan 9, 2019, 02.55 AM IST

THANE: After criss-crossing the Metropolis, Metro seems to be making its way into the hinterlands with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) considering an independent route to connect Kalwa and Mumbra with Thane and Mumbai.

TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal recently announced the plan and said that the two suburbs could get the much-required connect during phase-2 of Thane’s internal Metro project. “We have done an initial survey for the city and suburbs and it revealed that there is a good ridership potential for Metro routes in Kalwa and Mumbra. So, we have proposed to develop a route, but only in phase-2 of the internal Metro project. We have proposed to embark on a detailed project report and will seek the approval of the general body this month,” Jaiswal told TOI on Tuesday. A proposal is likely to be drafted and tabled for approval soon, said a source.

The two suburbs—Kalwa and Mumbai—have a combined population of nearly 8 lakh and it is likely to increase over the next few years, necessitating improved transport facilities, said an official.

According to the initial plans, the Metro link could either be a ring route to ensure maximum ridership or unidirectional, depending on the feasibility study. The ring route could connect Kalwa, Kharegaon, Mumbra, Kausa, Shil and Airoli, said an official, adding that the design depends on feedback from residents and experts.

“The execution of KalwaMumbra Metro, if approved, could be through a special purpose vehicle between TMC, state and the Maha-Metro corporation,” said another official.

Experts said there was an urgent need for an alternative mode of transport in these suburbs as locals here rely only on the railways to travel out. “If approved, the Metro could have stations at a distance of a kilometre each and would help reduce traffic congestion here. The stations could also be connected with personal rapid transport system that has already been okayed by the general body,” said an expert.

Another source, meanwhile, claimed that officials had a bigger plan in mind—to integrate the various transportation modes being planned in the northern extended suburbs of Mumbai.

“We plan to link the KalwaMumbra route with other routes like Taloja-Kalyan, Mumbai-Kasarvadavli, the bullet train and the network of road projects being planned in the suburbs. The idea is to meet the future transport demands of the suburbs,” said an official, requesting anonymity.

The TMC has already fasttracked the work on the internal Metro project and hopes to get it started along with Metro IV.—Wadala to Kasarvadavali A meeting to secure permissions from the state and central agencies to start work is likely to be held soon.

“We have started discussions to work out the financial model for the internal Metro project. A series of meetings have been scheduled over the next few weeks, where all requirements including securing permissions and decisions on execution will be worked out,” said an official who will be present at the meetings.

Activists have welcomed the proposal but are wary about the announcement being just a political gimmick in an election year. “We have been demanding an alternative to railways for years. We have suggested a parallel Metro route to link popular hotspots like Retibundr with Thane and Navi Mumbai along with access to state highways,” said Siddhesh Desai of the Kalwa Parsik Pravasi Sanghatana.

Thane plans 29-km internal Metro line, 22 stations to connect the city
Its projected ridership is 5.76 lakhs every day and peak-hour ridership of more than 23,000

If all goes as per the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) plans, you will be able to travel by the internal Metro in five years.

Last week, the TMC submitted a detailed project report of the internal Metro to the state government and plan to start operations by 2025.

The proposed 29-kilometre internal Metro with 22 stations, estimated to cost around ₹10,893 crore, is projected to have a daily ridership of 5.76 lakh. Fares will range from ₹17 to ₹104.

A TMC official requesting anonymity said, “We sent the proposal to the state last week. The plan is to complete all approvals by the end of this year and start the civil work by January next year. We will have to acquire all the developmental plan [DP] roads from where the Metro route is proposed.”

A 21-km High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) is proposed in the developmental plan of the city.

The Metro will operate along 18.17-km DP roads, six-km HCMTR route and 4.83 km of reserved land.

The new internal Metro was first proposed along the same route as HCMTR. However, the corporation later connected the internal Metro to the New Thane station and changed the route from Kopri to Teen Hath Naka to New Thane station to Wagale Estate.

The second phase will operate along Mumbra-Kalwa route.

The official added, “The internal Metro will have a projected ridership of 5.76 lakhs daily and a peak hour ridership of over 23,000.

“The minimum fare will be ₹17 for up to 2 km and the maximum fare will be ₹104 for more than 31km.”

The internal Metro will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli Metro at two places at the proposed New Thane station and Dongripada.

It will also connect Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi- Kalyan) at Majiwada junction.

Experts Speak
KD Lala, retired city engineer of Thane Municipal Corporation, said, “The internal Metro will be feasible in the city only if it connects the main Wadala to Kasarvadavli Metro at several places along the entire Anandnagar to Kasarvadavli route. Residents living in interior parts will need a mode of transport to connect to the main Metro which connects Thane to Mumbai. The old HCMTR route will not work and the TMC will need to revise the route to connect it to the main Metro.”

With both the Metro projects being carried out simultaneously, traffic will be a major issue in the city. Lala said it was better to carry out projects together instead of executing it one by one.

He said, “The Metro authority has given 100% alignment to the contractor so he can carry out work on any of the patches. This pattern should also be adopted in internal Metro to speed up the work.”
