The Birmingham NEC is preparing to host a global first as Merlin Entertainments announced the next chapter in its growing portfolio of exciting attractions – THE BEAR GRYLLS ADVENTURE– which will open in 2018.

The 8000-square metre action packed experience has been created in partnership with Bear Grylls himself at a total cost of £20 million, features indoor skydiving, climbing and the highest free-roam high ropes in Europe, not to mention it will open as a permanent attraction feature.

Located part indoor & part outdoor, tBGA will provide almost 145,000 sq ft of space for leisure use. Activities will comprise four half-hour long slots, each with the capacity for 200 visitors. There will also be a café and shop on the site.

Full list of attractions:

Dive – Experience the thrill of a new environment as you take on the ultimate deep dive experience.

High Ropes - Zip slide from a Chinook helicopter onto the most extreme high ropes action in Europe.
Basecamp – a collection of four mental, physical, group and individual challenges designed to help you learn the core skills for adventure.

Work began on site on the first week of September within the Pavilion building. As of November/December, work has now started outdoors, with multiple JCB's, mixers, diggers and a vast array of scaffolding now up.

If the going gets tough can you book into a nearby B & B?

What does this take up in the NEC? Have we lost exhibition space?

Had a look at Bear Grylls Adventure this afternoon.

Bear Grylls Adventure. They are building it where the flags and flagpoles used to be. The Lions Club plaque has been moved to outside of Genting Arena.

Helicopter

Bear Grylls continued.

Building to the left.

Hoarding info

Snazzy construction sign!

Looking over my old NEC photos from 2016, they are building Bear Grylls where the flags and plaques used to be.

Plaque from 1973 - the then PM Edward Heath started construction of the NEC.

It was then opened in 1976 by The Queen.

The Lions International plaque from 1998

I only noticed that again today, but outside of the Genting Arena.

Next to a Rotary International log.

This opens 12th September
& Birmingham International has been renamed to BEARmingham International for the week. I bet Janet in the office was proud of that suggestion

they had one of those climbing frames in merry hill a while ago - it didn't last too long and it was indoors. I cant imagine there would be too much call for its use on a cold, wet winter day.
The indoor activities look good - especially the skydiving.
Hoping to get my son there for his bday later this month and have a good mooch around.

With the final touches to the landscaping almost completed the Bear Grylls Adventure is looking very impressive from the outside.

The wording accompanying some of the photos is from the Bear Grylls Adventure website. https://www.beargryllsadventure.com/birmingham

Inspired by the famous military Tarzan course, there are 36 different challenges over 5 storeys on our confidence high ropes course. Zigzag across rolling beams, climb ladder bridges and cross snake steps over 20 metres above the ground.

Zip slide from the Chinook helicopter then choose your route. Use strength and balance to navigate high above the ground. Once you’re in there’s no looking back - and only the brave look down.
