Work has now started on the site of the former Co-op department store and the adjacent 2 – 12 Corporation Street, known as the Hawkins building, which will be transformed as part of a redevelopment.

The scheme will bring the building back into use and will transform the area that fronts on to Corporation Street while retaining the former store’s iconic features including the stone columns complete with colourful engravings and covered walkways. The ground floor area will be split into smaller units for new shops and restaurants – there could also be seating under the covered section. New rental apartments for rent will be created on the upper floors.

It’s a good job Historic England didn’t get their claws into this one, it would’ve remained an empty shell for years. I bet the Belgrade could be looking at getting their hands on a couple of the apartments for some of the more illustrious visiting performers.

Skybluecity, thosd renders do look rather tasteful. So glad the architects didn't vomit loud colour all over their sketch pads...

This is working really well. Makes me look forward to seeing what modernisation can do for the Upper Precinct!

The proposed link from Smithford Way as part of the public realm stage 5 improvements will be really essential for those ground floor units.
