The great world viticultural areas are close to the rivers. As a close example we have the D.O (Appellation of Origin) Ribera del Duero near the Duero river. The Duero is the third longest river on the Peninsula, after the Tagus and Ebro, and has the largest peninsular hydrographic basin. Although born in the Picos de Urbión (Iberian System), it flows into Porto (Portugal) but crosses Castile and Leon on its way, crossing the cradle of the Ribera del Duero and Toro wine (and another minor D.O: Arlanza, Cigales, Rueda, Arribes and Valtiendas), leaving an unparalleled footprint in their wines.

The Duero, then, is a river of wine, history and art; of small cities of prodigious architecture and small villages, many of them held in medieval pasts of singular authenticity; what seems visigothic, is visigothic, what seems romanesque, is romanesque, what seems gothic, is gothic, what seems renaissance, is renaissance, and even, what seems roman, is roman.

From here I encourage the Portuguese friends that if they want to show the Portuguese part of the river to do so, there is much to teach about the Portuguese Douro, its beautiful riversides and its equally exceptional wines.

As a note to the introduction.

The Duero/Douro is by far the most powerful river of Iberia. And in the great major flood of the river in 1738 (some sources put 1727 as the great) was close to 20 000 m3/s in Porto (Oporto), put the river as the most powerful instantaneous river of Western Europe.

P.S. The great floods of the XX century, and may be the 2nd and 3rd historicals, were in 1909 and 1961 with 16 700 and 15 700 m3/s.
