I thought it was £20bn.... whichever it is, its a ridiculous price. Howcome Alistair Darling didnt ask to cut costs on this.

yeh, will give london £12 billion plus for this, no questions asked; but wont give less than £1 billion for the metrolink extensions!!
or the merseytram or Leeds supertram or any transport. Crossrail might be important but at least London is managing and people can get around easy enough.

I irony is in 2002 Crossrail was costed at £10bn (see the link), he is now saying that the cost will be £15bn to £16bn as construction will not start until 2007.
Metrolink Phase 3 cost £520m in 2002, it will now cost a lot more in 2007 (when construction is likely to start) - has the government said that the money will be found for the Metrolink extension - NO, we still have been given the 2002 figure of £520m - the question I would love anyone from London to answer, who thinks that London gets a bad deal in such circumstances, is why it appears the London money is going up with inflation, yet other schemes such as Manchester, Leeds, Portsmouth and Livrepool have been cancelled under similar circumstances?

Imagine the tram network Manchester could get for £20bn... :drool:
I think if any city had a budget of £20bn, they'd spend it on getting a much more advanced transport network than a tram!
I just have a feeling crossrail wont happen unless London pays for it through f'ing council tax.

Englishman, we will see - but if funding does come from central government for this scheme - at £16bn, when schemes around the country are being cancelled for £10m's then there should be an outcry - it would be the most blatant case of pro-london, and anti rest of the country that we'd ever seen.
I never said an underground. I was thinking more of Ultra Cabs. And its not going to happen so I wouldnt worry about it.

not £16bn, I'll tell you that. Apparently, 20 Leeds Supetrams can be bought with the amount being spent on Crossrail. So that means 20 cities could have light rail, or more really in mind that Manchester, Sheffield and Nottingham already have them. And you would probably want a larger network, so double a Leeds Supertram and 1/2 the amount of cities. So Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Bradford, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Hull, for example could get them. Its such a waste of money and to be honest I'm sure London can manage another few years without it. Its not going to be finished for 2012, instead 2016 so there shouldnt be any rush for the olympics.
After reading the entire debate, the point was that the difference in teh figures was that £10.4 billion was the price in 2002. But after adjusting for expected inflation the cost would be closer £16 billion once the project was finshed in 2013a difernce in almost 10 years. Now I may be wrong but the secretary of state was sounded uncoverned over point in accounting standards. I feel some people bitterness over their own cancelled plans are affecting their opinions of crossrail. I need i remind anyone that both Manchester and Leeds had their parlianetary approval before they got cancelled. I will not truly believe it will built until I see those tunnel boring machines whirring.
Rational Plan, the Crossrail plan has ben approved despite costs escalating due to inflation. Have you not noticed how other schemes have been told they can't take this into account? It's another case of double standards for London.
