melk designs a 5,000 acre park in Egypt

03/31/2016

The government of Egypt has embarked on the construction of a new capital city. The Master Plan from which the new city is being constructed was conceived by the esteemed Egypt-based planning consortium 5+UDC. This spectacular endeavor is located in between Cairo and the Suez Canal. A significant component of 5+UDC’s plan is a 5,000 acre central park, named “The Green River,” for which !melk, in collaboration with EDSA and Oekoplan, has been commissioned to design. At 6.25 times larger than New York City’s Central Park, this ambitious public space will become the largest central urban park in the world.
In February !melk founder Jerry van Eyck and EDSA principal Kona Gray presented their first ideas to both Minister (of Housing and Urban Development) Madboly and President el-Sisi.

To be honest, the scenery/foliage around the buildings are what going to make the "look" of the city.
Buildings in the US for example are not that better than buildings in many Arab countries, US buildings sometimes are even older/uglier. But, they have the scenery and the landscape design to go with the urbanism. While in many Arab countries the buildings look very monotonous and plain and detached from any contrasting element.

Outsider here. This project looks ambitious and amazing! From the looks of it, the new capital seems like a version of Malaysia's Putrajaya (administrative capital), only with a lot more buildings. Also agree with the person above ^^ . Scenery and landscaping truly is the kingmaker in a city's beauty.

This is next-level landscaping, very beautiful. Egyptian cities are far too dense for anything like this though. I think the planned "green river" will bring in a beautiful contrast, hopefully they'll execute it well.

Work on the first phase of green river has begun, first phase to be opened in June 2020 and water is to be recycled.

Here's an amazing video (It was removed from YouTube) that shows it's contents, including: A boating lake, a tram (at 6:55), downtown district, events park, an outdoor cinema and an Islamic garden.

EDIT:Found it on youtube, hopefully it doesn't get removed :p
