it's a 國小= elementary school
^^ oh.. thx buddy.. dint read carefully hehe! :eek:kay: there arn't many skools in Taipei that hav designs like 西寶國小吗? is quite modern and maybe green.. anyway is 西寶和內湖 a small town? 內湖國小是在山上的吗?
to be honest, taipei and big cities' schools' design're mostly kinda...不怎麼樣 even 難看 sometime.

you rather can find this sorta charming schools in mountains or very far-away areas. they're mostly frequented by taiwanese aborigenal or polynesian children.

both 西寶和內湖國小are in the central mountains area. 西寶國小is in hualian county(east taiwan) and 內湖國小is in nantou county, in the center of taiwan.

Good job Pierre-L, thanks for sharings pics.
^^ nice pics! how i wish i could study at 椰油國小.. can go swiming and sunbathing everyday.. looks like a resort more than a skool i think!
Those schools could certainly double up as resort chalets during the summer breaks... City schools look high tech though, with their scrolling ticker LED displays at the entrance to the schools. What is it with Taiwan and putting LEDs everythere? haha.....

Off topic but what is the Taiwanese competancy in the english language?

taiwan is one of the biggest producers of LED products. only makes sense for the country to utilize them.

one of the lowest in asia even tho taiwanese spend so much money on english cram schools. people just don't use english in their daily lives.
doesn't help that the country is not that international, having a small foreign expat population unlike hong kong and singapore.

I don't find that to be a bad thing ;)

^^ at least they can understand a few words.. thats good enuf.. alot of people can only speak and understand one languages.. 台湾人不算差啦!
Why should any Taiwanese be REQUIRED or even EXPECTED to speak English anyway?
Why should any Taiwanese be REQUIRED or even EXPECTED to speak English anyway?
required? no. expected? well if taiwan wants to compete against other countries in the global arena for business, trade, finance and attract global investments, then yes, taiwanese should learn english. because as you know, english is THE international language and the language business is conducted in, not to mention diplomacy. so THAT'S why taiwanese should learn english. capisce?

Oh puh-lease.

If a Taiwanese has a job that requires him or her to deal with English-speaking clients, then of course they should learn English. But why should the average Taiwanese know English at all? Just so some inconsiderate lost American tourist can find his way back to the hotel?

It's people like you why some Americans expect the whole world to speak their language... :eek:hno:

BTW, just in case you didn't notice, I wasn't really looking for an answer, I was making the point that Taiwanese (or citizens of any non-English speaking country for that matter) should NOT be expected to speak English. No one ever voted for English to be the international language. It only became that way because of nearly 300 years of English dominance over the world from the British Empire to the American one... Like I said, if you want to make money from English-speaking clients, you'd better know English, but if you don't, there is no reason to learn it at all.

OH PUHLEEEEEZE. no one is saying "the average taiwanese" like your betal nut chewing taxi driver or prostitute selling betal nuts or your vendors selling tso tofu should learn english and no one is forcing them to learn english. but i'm sure most taiwanese parents don't wish their kids to become those kinds of average taiwanese. most probably want their kids to be a working white collar professional in a high paying job like finance or law or even in the hi-tech fields, in which case english skills would probably be required or preferred. and if taiwan is to compete with other countries in these industries and attract foreign capital investment and foreign white-collar professionals to help them develop their industries like finance, then they need a labor pool that can speak english. capisce????????????

I think what Pangu's trying to say is that people should never be expected to learn english, but that of course it's extremely advantageous to do so in the modern business world. It should always be a matter of choice rather than expectation - but now we're getting into semantics.

That said, Taiwanese have a genuine determination to improve their lives and I thinks that is a big factor in parents pushing their kids to learn english in cram schools - in about another 5-10 years we'll have a whole new generation of fluent english speakign business people, giving Taiwan a massive boost in its ability to compete globally.
