^^ Not necessarily... San Francisco actually has 3 working international airports plus another one up north that handle commercial flights. And by the way, SFO may be the 23rd busiest airport in the world in terms of passengers, but its network is relatively small compared to other airports of its size (LAX, some 350 miles, 600 km southwest, is much, much busier than SFO).
If all SFO airports are connected with dedicated Trams or people Mover Train with station immigration like HKG then it could well serve most connected as well as with good frequency and options...!

In Dubai......DXB and JXB plans for special tram/metro to be interconnected...!

^^ SFO is already connected with...

- the Airtrain for inter-terminal services; and
- BART for trips to San Francisco and the East Bay (also serves Millbrae for connections to Caltrain, providing additional connections to communities along the Peninsula and Silicon Valley)

In fact, Oakland International will have its own people mover system connected to BART (at Oakland Coliseum/Airport) which will theoretically allow airport passengers to use trains all the way through between either SF, Oakland, or many outlying cities in the Peninsula or the East Bay and the airports.

The most conected airport in Latin America, Sao Paulo (GRU), is linked with more than 120 cities (58 cities outside Brazil).

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) ranks #2 on the Airliners.net list. But when taken into consideration that AMS does not offer connections to domestic airports, one could say that AMS is the world's best internationally connected airport, given the fact that all ex-AMS connections are international.

When the size of the 'home market' is also taken into consideration, the #2 rank is even more spectacular as AMS does have a home market of 'just' 16,5 million. FRA for instance, has a home market of 81 million.

DXB. If its not No.1 now, it will be very soon. FlyDubai is opening so many routes to many smaller cities and with its fleet increasing to over 100 aircraft in a few years. and with EK adding a few destinations every year, I could see DXB easily reaching first place.

Dubai Int'l passenger traffic grows by 9.9% in September

Passenger traffic at Dubai International grew by 9.9 percent in September with nearly six million people using the aviation hub, according to latest figures issued by its operator.

Dubai Airports said 5,942,628 passengers used the airport last month compared to 5,407,326 recorded in the corresponding month last year.

Year-to-date traffic rose 6.2 percent to 52,422,547, compared to 49,379,165 recorded during the first nine months of 2013.

The passenger per aircraft movement increased by 4.6 percent to 201.8 from 192.9 year on year, boosted by an increase in the number of wide bodied aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777.

“The airport’s performance in the first three quarters has been very satisfying and we anticipate brisk growth will continue as we head down the home stretch to year-end,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.

“Clearly, more and more people are choosing Dubai as their preferred hub not only for the extensive network of 260 destinations that we connect around the world, but also for the wide array of options we offer our customers for dining, shopping and resting.”

Aircraft movements totalled 30,871, up by 0.4 percent compared to the 30,746 recorded during September 2013.

All regions recorded positive growth in September with the exception of Russia and the CIS countries owing to political instability in the region, Dubai Airports said.

^^ Speaking of connections to South America, so many airlines funnel their passengers through either Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, or Bogota for that matter. Guarulhos, especially, caters to so many international flights, while its companions in Viracopos and Congohas provide extensive domestic services. And Vircaopos will soon get additional international flights with Azul and American, perhaps as a result of the overcrowding at Guarulhos (TAP Portugal already operates to VCP). And Panama City is a fast-growing airline hub as well, thanks to Copa Airlines' extensive daily services between Panama and the rest of the Americas and the Caribbean.
