North East and Tyneside 'ghost signs' are a window into the region's past
By David Morton, The Chronicle, 12th September 2015

Images by photographer Steve Ellwood throw new light on the long-gone commercial life of the region. They are a window into the history of the North East, but ‘ghost signs’ often remain unseen by the passing public. So what is a ghost sign? It’s best described as an advert on a building showing the presence of a company or business which is no longer in occupation.

The signs can range from hand painted advertisements on brick walls to incised lettering, usually the name of the long-gone company. In many cases the handpainted signs are now fading with age but in many parts of the country they are being restored.

A group of local historians and photographers have for some time been recording these ghost signs around the North East and they host their images via the online Newcastle Metro Area forum of Skyscrapercity which can be accessed at www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2258.

Steve Ellwood, a contributor to the forum, said that many ghost signs are to be seen above street level, so it’s always worth looking up. Steve, 59, a retired civil servant, who lives in Whitley Bay, said: “The signs give an insight into which businesses have operated in the past and their history is researched by forum members. “It is often quite a challenge to try and identify signs when they are faded, but usually the mystery is solved by reference to old trade directories.

Skyscrapercity.com is the world’s biggest online community. It was formed in Holland in 2001 and locally is represented by the North East England forum, which covers the areas of Newcastle, Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, Teesside and Humberside. Membership is free and registration can be made via www.skyscrapercity.com/index.php.

Raise your eyes to see "ghost signs" of North East

Very good article in "Nostalgia" section, over 2 pages, including text about Skyscrapercity site and 15 of Steve's Ghost Sign pictures, in paper edition of The Chronicle on Friday 11/09/15

KEN

The above-mentioned article about "Ghost Signs" and about the "Newcastle Metro Area Forum of Skyscraper City", appeared in the Chronicle some ten days ago, on 11th September 2015.

We quoted from both the hard-copy of the article, and the online-copy, back then . . .

Therefore, I was quite surprised, when looking through this mornings Journal (Monday 21st September) to come across exactly the same written article, in their 'Nostalgia' Section.

Well, at least it is some more good publicity for this Forum . . .
