The next WTS after the Burj Dubai

Hi all.

The BD is the first of many in a new order of tall. It has opened the eyes of many architects and engineers to what is possible today and in the near future.

The BD will always be near and dear to me. I am fascinated by its elegance and complex arrangement of tiers and setbacks. It is the first WTS to ever eclipse the last (WTB) by over 300 meters and 60 %. It will always be an icon and IMO will be the worlds tallest for a decade.

With that said it is starting to look like we are getting close to a race and/or a competition for the next WTS. With reports that Emaar may be getting involved with the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah the project may be close to approval. When the economy recovers I'm hoping Nakheel will continue with the Nakheel Tower in Dubai - word is that isn't going to happen - but I can hope. Then we have the Mubarak Tower in Kuwait that will get going with any luck. I would imagine we will hear of new proposals as well.

What a great time to be a scraper lover. We are hopefully about enter a race for the WTS that will rival the early 20th century. The thing is back then the news was limited to if and when the newspapers decided to cover it and only the local people got to read it. Now we get pics almost daily and get to discuss the construction with people who live near the projects. Projects that are 3 to 4 times as tall as back then - awesome.

To summarize:
- Kingdom Tower - Jeddah - 1100 to 1400 meters
- Nakheel Tower - Dubai - 1050 to 1400 meters
- Mubarak Tower - Kuwait - 1001 meters
- ?

There are much taller visions but I'm sticking with proposals here. What does everyone think ? Which will be the next WTS ?

i hope not nakheel tower, its ugly.
jeddah and kuwait have much better designs!
^^ the kingdom tower's design is very simple, its nothing exciting. and the Mubarak Tower is just a kid's drawing.....
I think that these buildings will never be build. And I guess that the BD will be the tallest at least until 2035-2040. For 30 years, maybe more.

The last building to top the WTB by more than 50% was the ESB (relative to the Woolworth building, with was the WTB until 1929), and it was the WTB for more than 40 years.

These buildings are absurd, each one would cost around 5 times the BD, since they will have much more mass. If they are build, then they will be a massive waste of money.
^^^^
I agree..IMO it'll be a very long time b4 this building loses it's title as WTB.
We have enough technologies to build a 10000m tower!! the problem is that why would we need to build 1000m + towers??? When our population will be counted as 15 billion i think it would be time to build extremly high supertalls...Another problem is money..who would want to spend an enormous amount of money to build these towers??only a few:lol::lol:.the second problem is that it cant be that tall because of the air traffic around. So probably in 15 years well have a new supertall:cheers::cheers::cheers:
the oilstates have the money, and they need the attention they would get with such buildings... for them, its just a massive investion into the future. what will they do if they run out of oil or oil is no more the most impartant energy source? they have no other ressources (as far as i know) and need to find other ways to keep their whealth. creating utopias with luxury, education, trade, virtual goods, research, tourism etc. is their only way to save the standard of living they have now. respect that they already realised that. and in our time, where shiny bling bling and luxury is the most important thing, i guess it might work out well, but im not a fan of these "attention-*****"-projects. but in the end, its just a crazy pokergame. who knows what happens in the next 50 years.
but i think these sciencefiction-cities in the desert are a good playground for humanity to find ways to develop more enviroment-friendly urbanism, even if it seems (and is) a bad idea to create huge cities on such locations.

I would be fine with the Dubai City Tower. Just some 1.5 miles / 2.4 km.

If you want a very, very tall building, well, you can have the:

X Seed 4000

source: wikipedia

At 4000 meters it would make any supertall look like an 9 story building on the side of the ESB.

It can be build, but who would put around 600 billion dollars on a building?

But it would be cool anyway.... An artificial mountain.

Anyway, the proposed date for completion is 2110, indeed, a realistic date. But I think that until the 22th century we will not seed monsters like these.

I hope so. I really hope so.
It just seems so dangerous to me. Reaching heights never conceived before and having tens of thousands of people in the tower. If it works it's awe inspiring and amazing but if not.... wow.

i do agree on how long the BD will hold the title for. but i wouldn't say these new breed of towers' won't be built. not too long ago i had listened to a broadcast on the BD and Adrian Smith ( the architect of the BD). and Mr. Smith said, for buildings to be tall as say "a mile high". it would be a different kind of tower then we see today. yeah there's going to be challenges like for example: the need for natural ventilation systems like natural light. then designers would need to start to hollow out the building. which like you said would be a massive waste of money. but i think within the next 5 too 10 yrs engineering and architecture will be more advance Very quickly. like when the burj dubai was announced, no one believed that it was even possible for such a tall tower. and at the time, the current tallest was just built, and it only took the title for WTB at a height of 56m or 183ft. then all of the sudden here comes the dubai tower that's not 200ft taller or 500ft taller but over 1,000ft. which could happen again. some other tower in the near future can take the title by a long shot just like the burj dubai.

2.4km??.. is this possible? i mean.. 800m .. its very tall.. but 2400m?

this one is rather way too ambitious than realistic, even for Dubai. given that real estate prices are falling dramatically in Dubai within the last several months or so, from my point of view, I think that this project is not going to be taken into serious consideration within 5 year span from now
i think it is ugly but the height will be invincible forever...
Hi all.

I personally love the dubai City Tower vision. Pure architectural porn. Fantastic - but only a vision.
This thread is about the next WTS. Any of the visions out there will not be the next WTS.
The Mubarak Tower in Kuwait is in the next category after visions - namely proposed. I haven't heard too much info on this one getting to the next category - approved.
The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah is in the approved category. It has a better chance of moving ahead than any projects still in the proposed category.
The Nakheel Tower is in the under construction category. It is on hold now and some say dead but there has been years of work put into the prep and I believe pile testing. If it does get going it will have the jump on the other 2 for sure.

I am not saying any of these will be the next WTS but they are the front runners IMO. All are over a kilometer in height and therefore represent a new milestone in tall. All are also 6 to 10 years away from completion if they get going now (Nakheel Tower is the only one that could be close to 6 but most likely longer). The BD will always be an icon and has set the bar very high - it could very well hold the record for well over a decade and IMO is The Greatest Structure of our Time. My sig is not just words to me - it is something I truly believe.

There will hopefully be other new projects going into the proposed category as the economy gets going. It would be cool to watch a race for the next WTS in the coming years.
