The 'not in any way suspicious' buildings gutted by fire thread

Right, I've simply had enough of Glasgow's beautiful old buildings being burnt down. How many times have we seen it happen? The latest example was the former Laurelbank (who became Laurelpark) School just off Great George Street in the West End. As I understand it, the building had been sold by Hutchesons Grammar School (who incorporated Laurelpark about 8 years ago) to a developer who promptly did diddly squat with it - I walked past it every day for about 2 years and saw precisely sweet f.a happening. I find it extremely difficult to believe that this latest incident is a tragic accident. I did my PhD in a similar building just down Great George Street and I imagine that it would be a nightmare for a developer to refurbish into modern dwelling spaces, if you catch my drift...

Story at the BBC here.

Davey: feel free to close this thread, but I think we're going to get sufficient subject material to keep this one going.

Three fires this week at Govan Graving Docks. Latest one this morning.
I'm just back from running along the river and there wasn't anything on fire when I was passing that way (honest officer)
Another fire at Govan Graving Docks this evening.
My heart always sinks when i see this thread has bubbled to the top again
Looks like it was the former Balshagray Public School, by Bruce & Hay, 1904. C-listed.

There was plans last year to convert it into flats. No sign of anything happening until now.
Not a million miles away from Scotway House either, which as I posted in the Buildings Watch thread, had a handily open ground floor window when I wandered past the weekend before last...

Police probe launched after 'wilful' fire in Glasgow building

Not the most tragic but not good none-the-less:

olice have launched an investigation into a fire which took hold in a building in Glasgow.

The blaze started in the sixth floor of the building, which was under construction, at around 11pm on Friday evening.

Police Scotland said they are treating the incident as 'wilful' and enquiries have begun.

Firefighters battled through the night to bring the blaze under control, and crews remained at the scene on Saturday morning to dampen down the remaining hot spots.

Nobody was reported as injured in the fire, but a section of Duke Street was closed overnight as the incident was dealt with.

Anyone with any information on the fire can contact the police non-emergency number on 101.

Someone is really unhappy about the student housing boom.
Ah, takes me back to the heady days of the Glasgow building site security firm "disputes"...!

I want to say I'm shocked, but it was always going to happen... Expect a pull down of the building by Sunday
