Tokyo has been historically referred as either Tokyo or Edo, or in mandarin dongjing...

Tonking however historically refers to Hanoi in Western literature, which once was also named 東京.

Tonking however historically refers to Hanoi in Western literature, which once was also named 東京.
Tokyo is not named because it intended to become the eastern capital of Asia.
Tokyo(東京:とうきょう)'s original name was Edo(江戸:えど), about 200 years ago, it was renamed when Japanese moved their capital from Kyoto(京都:きょうと-means Capital City) to Edo.
Tokyo(東京) literally means "Eastern Capital", and it's named like that because it was located in the east of formal capital Kyoto.(Wiki: 京都から見て東の京(みやこ)の意である。)

In East Asian History... There were a couple of 東京s in different countries(Kingdoms) because of this reason.
For example : Hanoi in Vietnam was once called Đông Kinh (東京) or Đông Quan (東關, Eastern Gateway)
KyongJu in South Korea was also called DongKyong (東京: 동경) during Koryeo(高麗) Period.
