The Top Ten Types Of Miami's Worst Drivers

10. The Sudden Lane Change At 2 MPH.

You're at a red light, southbound, about five cars back from the painted stop bar, on a 5 lane intersection (2 lanes each direction and one turn lane). Suddenly you see a turn signal on the back of the minivan in front of you, desiring to leave the southbound lane, and creep into the left turn lane which is also waiting for a green light (arrow).

There's only one car at the stop bar so the minivan can basically angle his way partially out of your lane, but not enough for total clearance when the light changes. It's front end is also basically doing the same thing in the left hand lane.

The light changes, giving a green arrow and green straight for all the lanes headed southbound and eastbound. The driver of the minivan hesitates and looks at the car behind him in the turn lane to make sure he recognizes his motive of jumping in front. He creeps over slowly making sure not to have his bumper grab the back of the nice brand new silver Ford mustang in front of you in your lane. He successfully completes the maneuver, just as the light is turning yellow, and proceeds to accelerate through the intersection, completing his turn and is well on his way over to the beach to enjoy pork chops and apple sauce on his hibachi.

Meanwhile, all the cars in front of where he was, which started to go through the light immediately, including the nice silver mustang, make it through a yellow light, except you, there's a large amount of space between you and the light, the light turns red because you had to wait for him to creep out.

Moreover, many drivers behind you now think it was you who caused all this, and you begin to hear all sorts of colorful metaphors and obscenities being bellowed out the windows of those vehicles.

My biggest pet peeve is drivers on the highway having no concept of the fast lane. If you're driving slow and not passing anyone then don't drive in the left lane. Even when people are driving around them and then in front of them, they still stay there and have no clue. It boggles my mind how clueless people are.

My pet peeve slightly bigger than this is when they are driving slow in the left lane because they are on the phone.

But my biggest pet peeve is the number of people in South Florida who don't use their directionals and don't give you any clue as to what they are about to do until they make the turn.

Yes, I agree with you 100% on this too.

I think Florida needs to be like New York and ban all cell phone use while driving. Too many boneheads are at a light texting on their phones and the light turns green and they have no clue. Are someone who veers into your lane and has no idea because they are on their phone. It drives me nuts.

Another thing that gets me as a pedestrian is say when I'm out walking and I come to an intersection. I have the walk signal, but I still check to see if anybody might be wanting to make a turn as indicated by their turn signal. I see no one is, so I step off the curb, and lo and behold somebody slams on their brakes and nearly causes an accident because they make a turn just as I'm stepping off the curb and I have the walk signal.

Yes that, and when you're half way through an intersection and a car making a turn on the other side can clearly see you and tries to make the turn quickly before you walk in front of them, instead of waiting for you like they're supposed to... The famous "slow down but don't stop before making the right on red" is where this one goes I think...

Another vote for the "driving too slow in the left lane" thing. I have no idea why but South Florida seems to be the undisputed champion of this type of behavior. Every time I'm back (which always involves a lot of highway time) it's something I notice immediately. It's maddening.

Here's another one that is more universal. People being clueless (or not giving a crap) who has the right of way at a four-way stop. You go by who reaches the intersection first...a very simple courtesy...but so many d-bags just jump their turn because, you know, they are just VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE who can't bother with things like patience and being polite.

The cheaters.
This line of cars 30 deep waiting to turn. No you don't have to worry about them. You and your bmw are special. Just go ahead and cut over at the last minute and make your turn. Those lines on the road are for everybody else. And by all means, please treat the shoulder as your own personal HOT lane. You are special. You deserve it.

This is another pet peeve of mine, people who won't wait their turn.^^ Also, as a pedestrian, people who stop at a red light or stop sign and are about to make a right turn, but only look in the direction the traffic is coming from, unaware that you are about to step off the curb.

Actually there's more to the four way stop thing, if vehicles approach the intersection at the same time, (assuming it's not 4 at once), the driver to your left has the right of way. Moreover, another intrusion on the right of way situation at stop signs... And these people really blow my fuse... BICYCLISTS who don't stop at all. These numb nuts are supposed to follow the same rules as traffic, and yet, you see them all the time jumping in front of traffic, making illegal left turns, riding on the wrong side of the road against the flow of traffic, riding on sidewalks, and there's always that one that has to ride right in front of you for 5 miles without getting over to the right enough so you can pass him.

LOL, at least you weren't in Paris. Talk about some crazy people on the roads... Milan I can sympathize with, although I will say that northern Italy is quite a beautiful trip, I hope you enjoyed it, I'd like to go back again now that I can speak the language a bit more fluently without needing a guide or books.

If you visit Paris, always watch to the right when you step out in front of a building BEFORE you get to the curb, mopeds, motorized skateboards, small little dipsy-doo cars riding on the walk, and they will hit you and they will not stop. At least in the Boulogne Billancourt, which is just west of the city center, which is like comparing downtown Miami to Opa-Locka/N Miami in terms of reference. Lots of congested curvy roads and weird street names.

What? Do I need to quote the Department of Motor Vehicle handbook?

When two vehicles approach a four way stop at the same time, if you're on the right, the other vehicle has the right of way. The other driver doesn't have anyone to his left. If the two vehicles are opposing each other, the driver making a right or going straight has the right of way.

What's so difficult about this? It is the law.

Read below... we certainly don't want to include any forum members in our rants...

Left lane slow... flip side of the coin....

The only time I side with the slow driver in the left lane is when they are already at or slightly above the speed limit, and someone is tailgating them. This I find to be a problem as well, people need to slow down and observe the speed limit.

I was pulling out of a bank parking lot making a left and approaching a traffic light that was red, a car that was traveling well over the speed limit coming from the right got right up on me and started flashing his lights and honking, even though the light was red and we both had to stop anyway. I never understand this insanity, why this person felt they needed to "rush" to get to the red light. They rolled down the window and yelled at me, "What are you fu*king stupid? You must be stupid!!!"... I simply smiled and waved and said, "Thank you, I didn't realize how stupid I was until you informed me".

I always try to practice safe driving, that's why I like to drive on the left lane, always 10 to 15 miles below the speed limit! Also, turn signals are helpful but their use should be discretionary, to avoid unnecessary slow downs I always switch lanes quickly without signaling and resume safe driving mode at the above mentioned 10 to15 miles below speed limit, keeping a safe minimum distance of 5 car's length with the vehicle in front. Too many cars clogging an exit ramp causes traffic jams, that's why I always cut to the front of the line, keep the traffic flowing people! Last, time is money, driving on the express way is the perfect time to call your girlfriend and make those dinner plans or beat your record score of Candy Crush! :)

Don't forget to make sure you throw all your cigarette butts out the window, lit, it's the perfect place on the highway to get rid of them without stinking up your trash cans.

This thread has reminded that years ago there was a driving school in and around Little Haiti called 'Unique Driving Method.'

Never has a company had a more fitting name.
