Ballina's hopes rise for papal visit

IT'S A sleepy coastal town where suddenly everyone is looking for signs of divine intervention in the form of a visit from Pope Benedict XVI.

Many residents of Ballina, in northern New South Wales, hope a surprise is headed their way with a fast-growing belief in a swirling rumour that the Pope plans to stay there next month to recuperate from his flight from the Vatican before attending the week-long World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney.

The Catholic Church is understandably coy about confirming or denying the Pope's movements during his Australian visit.

But yesterday the believers in Ballina were filled with excitement and pinning their hopes on several clear clues that they say suggest "El Papa" is on his way.

The Pope's close friend, and one of his lieutenants in the church, Cardinal Christopher Schoenborn, will stay in Ballina for five days from July 15, the church has confirmed.

"He's (Cardinal Schoenborn) being hosted by the parish priest. He will be in the presbytery at the back (of Ballina's Francis Xavier Catholic Church). It's a large residence," said Catholic diocese of Lismore World Youth Day executive officer Adam Sullivan.

And yesterday afternoon, as some parishioners prayed in the church, a sure sign that something special was about to happen materialised above.

Local painter Kevin Johansson climbed on to the roof of the church to begin what he described as a late request from the diocese for a quick coat of paint, although he couldn't say too much more.

"We've heard the Pope is coming. We might be doing up the church for his visit," Mr Johansson said.

Officially, the Catholic Church says the Pope will leave Rome on Saturday, July 12, to fly to Australia. And when he arrives here, he will have three days of private rest and recreation.

The Pope has even allocated the time out of his annual holiday leave, the church has confirmed.

Mr Sullivan said he was well aware of the rumours about a papal detour to Ballina, but he said he not received any official contact as yet from the Vatican about a possible visit.

He said he suspected some people were reading too much into the cardinal's visit.

"The only link is some people are putting two and two together," Mr Sullivan said.

"Nothing has been said from an official point of view. The Pope has three days' rest before World Youth Day and the places where he's going haven't been announced."

Ballina Mayor Phillip Silver said the town would be honoured to host the Pope and the council could make the proper security and accommodation arrangements at short notice, if necessary.

"We have a jet airport at Ballina and we would hopefully accommodate the Holy Father's aeroplane, and I'm sure we'd find accommodation in the region that was suitable for him," he said.

Yesterday, Ballina's tourists and locals offered accommodation suggestions for the Pope beyond visiting the local attraction, the Big Prawn.

Brian Beyer, 68, from Caboolture, who arrived in Ballina with his wife Val a week ago, said the Pope should stay at the caravan park.

"The rates are $160 a week," he said. "It's the best point around (for fishing)."

Tourism leaders said they would prepare a shortlist of the best possible trips for the Pope, weighing up what would be popular for a man of his age and interests.

"This is a tricky one," Byron Bay tourism manager Liz Shepherd said.

"I think it would be nice for him to see the cultural activities in the valley, the sporting things, the markets, where you see people's lifestyle."

They'll be seceding next to create their own City-State. Bit like the Vatican. Maybe that should be 'Town-State'.....?

Out of every Ballina thread on this forum, this is probably the only one which would exist if BSD was not a member.

And why the **** would the pope stay in a caravan park? In Ballina? With 1991-produced BSD next door? Lol.
