On an extended walk for medical reasons I passed this forlorn tree on the estate between the former North Durham Cricket Club and Ely Street in Gateshead. It looks like wind damage but the wind hasn't been that strong of late though it has been a while since I have walked that way because of the lockdown:

Noctilucent clouds are self-explanatory and show up in summer in the northern hemisphere. They are the highest cloud and form around nucleii of meteoritic dust. You'll see them in the north, at night, and they shine with reflected sunlight. For some reason, presumably connected with global warming, they are appearing earlier in the year and further south. Some were spotted last week from Teeside and it's a good idea perhaps to look out for them over the summer.

There was a lot of minor tree damage around Gateshead today though some of it looked like kids swinging on branches rather than wind damage. However another stretch of fencing round the Nursery House Club on Claremont Street Gateshead took a hit.

Another part of the same fence was blown down in 2015 but that was in November.

The funding, aimed at protecting homes, businesses and jobs, comes on top of a long term £5.2 billion package to construct around 2,000 new flood and coastal defences that will better protect 336,000 properties from flooding by 2027

The list of projects includes:

  • £6 million for the Team Valley. This scheme will provide better protection for the Team Valley trading estate, which employs nearly 20,000 people.
  • £1m for Hexham. This scheme will deliver a solution to the high risk of river flooding on two industrial estates in Hexham, which are located close to the banks of the River Tyne.
  • £450,000 for Ponteland. The scheme is improvement of an existing embankment and flood wall, to provide a more climate resilient standard of protection.
