Catholic youth primed for world gathering

NSW Premier Morris Iemma, Cardinal George Pell and 60 Catholic youth from around the country will meet the Pope at the Vatican today for the official handover of the World Youth Day cross and icon.

The gesture is the equivalent of handing over of the Olympic flag between host cities.

The gathering will be held in Sydney from July 15 to 20 in 2008. World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1986 to celebrate young people's Catholic faith.

The handover signals the official start of preparations for what is set to be the biggest event in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics, with up to 500,000 visitors expected from around Australia and overseas.

It will also mean a visit from Pope Benedict XVI, who will celebrate Mass to close the events. The 3.8 metre World Youth Day cross and the Icon of the Lady will be handed over to the delegation at the end of the Palm Sunday Mass, conducted by the Pope in St Peter's Square.

Six of the delegates will receive communion from the Pope during the service.

Cardinal Pell said the handover was "a most significant moment for our young people and the church in Australia" and it was a delight to see the excitement of the young delegates, who represented many parts of the church in the country.

Cardinal Pell and the Sydney World Youth Day management team presented plans for the event to 350 delegates in Rome yesterday at the international gathering of youth day organisers.

In Sydney tonight there will be a special Palm Sunday Mass at St Mary's Cathedral and celebration of the handover.

Don't tell me we have to fund some or a bit of it.
I'm sure the backpackers of the world will fill the streets in Sydney and across Australia.
500,000 interstate and overseas visitors! That's bigger than the Olympics and like 5-10 times bigger than the Comm Games. WTF ??
Hey, over the past few thousand years, religion has proven to be very good at persuading people to do anything. :)
Seeing Howard is a Cardinal Pell arselicker expect a few hundred million of our taxpayer money in the name of security purposes to be spent promoting this event that only pushes one particular brand of religion.
Would be interesting to see if the same support is given to other world religions like Islam,Budhism,Hinduism etc?
Fantastic event! Very positive, great to see it's coming to Sydney!
Catholic youth festival wins $40m pledge from leaders The Australian 10/4/06

^^Commonwealth and NSW governments have pledged $20 million each. Surely it's worth providing some support for the staging of such an enormous event? I'm suprised that there's so much negativity towards it.

I actually know one of the Australians accepting the World Youth Day cross from the pope on behalf of Australia. She tried to get me to go on a religious youth retreat once.
I know of a few people from my school who went on the last one to Colonge, Germany last year.
What do they need money for? Won't god take care of them?

No you are quite wrong about my opinion!

Yes I dont like Howard and I dont like Beasley either and Im not against this as an event but what I object very strongly to is that my money is going to prop up a specific religious festival that that has no signicance to the vast majority of the Australian population.

The Catholic Church is not poor so let them sell some of the stolen riches in Rome to pay for their own self promoting events.
The funny thing is that old style right wing fundermentalist Catholic hating Protestant groups would be livid about this. :bash: Thats your all loving religion for you.

I am also against any of my tax money going to ANY type of religious school, we should be like the US where they get nothing from the Federal government.
Religious schools should get the same amount of money per student as any state school. The parents pay the same tax.
The state has absolutely no place in educating people in any other way than through the state system.
500,000 visitors! This is gonna be huge and a boost to the economy!
Oh great, half a million catholics running around Sydney for a week, please excuse me while i kill my self.

Actually, i might go on a week long holiday, yeah, that would probably be better.

Oh and sorry if you're catholic.

I'm not sorry if you're offended, i'm actually just sorry by that fact that you're catholic.

One of the Bill Hicks fans ;)

You are quite wrong the people choose to have their kids in private religious schools are the ones that should pay for the privilege not the rest of us that dont believe in religion - just a good state education.
The State has a moral obligation to educate its population from tax monies though the State system not to promote any particular religious dogma through propaganda. Thats the only reason religions promote education through schools to push their particular "market brand" of theories.

My taxes should be going to Government schools to improve them so parents dont have to think the private system is better just because they have superior facilties now mostly paid for by Canberra.
