According to Time Magazine
Best
Daley/Chicago
Franklin/Atlanta
Hickenlooper/Denver
O'Malley/Baltimore
Bloomberg/New York

Worst
Murphy/San Diego
Kirkpatrick/Detroit
Street/Philadelphia
Ill add one- Rybak in Minneapolis, what a elitest prick, a wimp too is dedicated to a rising crime rate, high homeless rates and an elitest

Any body have any comments on these?

Personally, I think Hickenlooper in Denver is trash compared to 3 termer Wellington Webb. Homicide is up 300% thanks to Hickenlooper, Highest Cocaine Use in America thanks to Hickenlooper, unemployment has quadrupled almost under the Hickenlooper administration. Hickenlooper owns to downtown Denver pretty and is a man worth hundreds of millions of dollars and an elitest too boot. Wellington Webb and Federico Pena were god and Hickenlooper is no different than John Street or Kwame Kirkpatrick. They talk aboit Hickenlooper taking a pay cut when he cut budgets to show that he has principle, yeah right the jerk owns downtown denver he sure as hell aint hurting, he also owns downtown colorado springs also.

^^ lol, i remember that, that was too damn funny (hate him), Also on philly.com they had a pole a couple of days ago asking whether mayor street was a good mayor or not, needless to say 52% said he was doing a terrible job and like two people said he did an excellent job (probably the mayor himself and his wife) and the other votes went to things in the middle: ok, neutrul or bad.

Mayor O'Malley is doing a solid job in Baltimore and was re-elected for a second term with ease. He's done some pretty innovated things at the Hall. Hes created some models for political and police accountablity which have won national awards and have even been adopted by other cities. During his tenure, property values in the city have gone up, property taxes have gone down, overall urban development and investment has gone up, more people have moved into the city, population loss has effectively stopped (or at least significantly slowed), and overall violent crime has gone down.

Schools, however, are more of a mess than they've ever been, which is due to the current CEO uncovering things that existed long before O'Malley was mayor. Baltimore's murder rate is still way too high and the police department has gone through 3 chiefs under his watch.

he has much bigger political plans that the two mayor who preceeded him. he clearly has his eyes fixed on the State House in Annapolis and is quickly becoming more integral in the National Democratic Party.

I cant's speak for the performance of mayors in other cities, but here in Chicago, Daley has really helped the city, maintain competitive on a global level.

Well it seems that all the other mayors who got good reps deserved it, but I don't know, I don't live there.
As for naming San Diego's mayor one of the three worst mayors, thats ridiculus. Hes not great but hes not one of the worst. If it wasn't for him and our ccdc, we wouldn't have our downtown boom. So TIME needs to look at some of his sucsess rather then focusing on some problems that came before him. :)

Yes, phillys mayor sucks! He doesnt do anything for this city.I cant wait until we vote again. Hurry up 2007!
I still can't believe how soundly he defeated Katz in the last mayoral election. Was Katz that bad of a candidate or is the city just so solidly Democrat that they couldnt bring themselves to vote for a republican?

Philadelphia is somewhat insane... I live in North Philly and it is a shitty place... STREET SUCKS ASS! He's a corrupt racist who feels it is the blacks vs. the whites and doesn't get it that the city will never improve if he keeps this mentality...he's been quoted as saying "the brothers are running the city now" etc. i guess it does keep all the blacks in his pocket (not like they would ever abandon him anyhow since he's black) and the white liberal elitistliberals feel too "guilty" to vote against him... after all... their ancestors supressed the blacks...

TIME Magazine's criteria:

TIME consulted with urban experts to choose the best among the leaders of America's most challenging cities, those with populations over half a million--a crop that brings in six Republicans, 22 Democrats and one unaffiliated mayor.
Here's the list of US cities with populations >500,000 (2003 US Census Bureau) and their growth since 2000:

2 Los Angeles California 3,819,951 125,131
3 Chicago Illinois 2,869,121 -26,895
4 Houston Texas 2,009,690 56,059
5 Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1,479,339 -38,211
6 Phoenix Arizona 1,388,416 67,371
7 San Diego California 1,266,753 43,353

10 Detroit Michigan 911,402 -39,868
11 San Jose California 898,349 3,406
12 Indianapolis Indiana 783,438 1,568
13 Jacksonville Florida 773,781 38,164
14 San Francisco California 751,682 -25,051
15 Columbus Ohio 728,432 16,962
16 Austin Texas 672,011 15,449
17 Memphis Tennessee 645,978 -4,122
18 Baltimore Maryland 628,670 -22,484

27 Nashville-Davidson Tennessee 544,765 -759
28 Portland Oregon 538,544 9,423
29 Oklahoma Oklahoma 523,303 17,171

I am sorry but this is a lie!!!

3 Chicago Illinois 2,869,121 -26,895
Do they hate chicago or something, they did this in the 90's and now...

Why did you cut NYC off the list?

Also, according to that list...

5 Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1,479,339 -38,211 means 1,441,128
6 Phoenix Arizona 1,388,416 67,371 means 1,455,787

So Phoenix unoffically surpass Philadelphia in 2003???
America's 5th city is Phoenix in Population now....

BTW Phoenix, Arizona's mayor..... too much people growing so quickly isnt good, especially when Pheonix only have 2 interstates and an airport near downtown.

But they did include Atlanta, oh no - the horror.

Anyways, Shirley Franklin is well deserving of the honors...

But certainly I will admit if the criteria is for municipal populations over 500k - then Atlanta shouldn't have been included.

Doesn't surprise me that Kilpatrick is on that list. This dude spent city funds on a damn Escalade. Make it so bad, he graduated from FAMU back in Tallahassee.
