Tito Barracks and their importance for people from Sarajevo?

Hello!
We are sorry if this is not exactly the place to ask, but as a group of architecture students from Italy with a project in Sarajevo, we really want to get in touch with some locals.
We have a project now to transform the Tito Barracks in a University Campus. In our project development, the social input in very important and since we cannot come to your city and ask you personally, we reach out to you through the internet forums.
Could you, please, let us know what the barracks mean to you, what is their importance for you as locals and how would your react to strong interventions in the present urban tissue?

Thank you so much for the patience and for your willingness to answer!

Speaking as someone who was born in Sarajevo and grew up in the city, seeing those barracks daily, I am ok with completely terraforming that area. The barracks always felt like a black hole in the fabric of the urban area. I would like to see the area open up in every direction and would be ok with large and unusual buildings, as long as it also allowed for trees, park areas and was done humanely.

I hope this helps.

Tito barracks ????
Why you connected Tito's name with the barracks ???
Those barracks were built during the 'Austrougarska period' when Tito was teenager - or maybe when he was as we say 'in diapers' !!!

The name of the former barracks is "Kasarna Maršal Tito" in the local language, which is roughly translated into "Tito Barracks". This comment is petty and not relevant to the topic. We all understand what area we are talking about. Even you knew what barracks are being discussed, so please either contribute constructively or stay out of the discussion.

save the buildings that have aestatic or Architectural value. Destroy the ones that don't.
Thank you so much! Yes, it does help!

Do you know of any buildings there that are worth saving? I can't recall any.

In my mind, this is prime real-estate and I wouldn't compromise any ambitious plan to re-imagine this area for any of the buildings currently there.

That said, I would leave the Tito statue within the complex as one of the focal points, as a nod to history:

I'd say that the vast majority of people share the opinion of @atlantis. It always has been and is indeed a black hole today.

As for the Tito monument, I'm all for it but please note that the public has very much polarized views on his heritage.

Also, you have to realize that not so long ago, less than a hundred years ago, this was where the city ended, and that's why the AH monarchy built the barracks there along with the customs unit and train station further down the road. When the city started to quickly expand after WW2, unlike other quadrants, this area was just skipped, mainly because of its military purpose, and the city boomed further down the Miljacka river. Only during this war the area stopped being a military object. The reason I am saying this is that you could understand why for a couple generations of Sarajevans this area did not practically exist as they were not allowed to visit it nor raise any questions about it.

The part of the area serves now as an US embassy which was a very stupid decision in my opinion as it again disabled the significant and most attractive part of the former barracks for public access in the years to come.

There are zero buildings of significant value.

I believe that the green belt along the Zmaja od Bosne should be preserved, and the green areas should dominate the rest of the quadrant as much as possible as this is what the city lacks.

The connection with other faculties across the main road shiuld be established in some practical way and it should be incorporated, as well as the tram on the main street.

Also a good pedestrian connection to the bus and train terminals across the Put života street should be planned as many students commute daily from other neighbouring towns.

Lots of "green" solutions are welcome because a) the city has ahuge pollution problem in winter time due to geographical position and excessive use of fossil fuels for heating, , b) we have zero awareness of the environment preservation even in the younger generation so what a better way to educate and instill some ecological way of thinking and habits into our young ones than through eco, green and energy efficient architecture :)

this was interesting solution

but unfortunately, the area that is now available for the campus is much smaller
i'm not so sure that the area is big enough for campus

As a younger person, I share the view that the current state of the "barracks" is really unfavorable for the city and has to be completly redevelop. I have zero connection with that place and always felt as it discontinued the city in that part which is intensified with not so great situation as well across the street with the building of MUP and similar. I always have that divide of the city from Vijecnica to the baracks, then the second part from Pofalici to Otoka (which is starting to change with the current construction in Alipasin Most) and last from Alipašino Polje to Nedzarici; Ilidza and Dobrinja being seperate from all other and their own thing. Keeping the green zone beside the main street is a must as well as a possibility to expand the current pavement on that part as well as along Put Života (I can't recall if it is a decent width along that street). Improvement for pedestrian communication to the Bus and Railway station is also very important as well as better stations for tram and bus along the main street. Does it have to stay as campus for the university? Not really if a better replacement has been given to the university with very good public transportation to it.

When it comes to the USA embasy, I'm a bit optimistic that in some 20-30 years it will be replaced with commercial buildings. I'm young so I'm not in that much hurry :D

Look at that this way:
Every single location in Sarajevo has its nickname. When you want to give an orientation where you wanna meet, you give the nickname:
"Papagajka / Parrot building", "Čeka / Waiting spot", "Teta razapeta / Crucified lady"... etc.
This particular spot, the former barracks, is for the majority people now only "Campus". I can hardly hear anyone call it "Kasarna / Barracks" or something like that.

Speaking now my own feelings, I was a bit disappointed that the US embassy took a piece of it, I was hoping that the whole complex will be University Campus, and nothing else. I still have the same resentment to Embassy being there. But for the remaining part, all with planned University library soon coming, Campus it is and will always be ;).

Along with that, to me a University is somehow a synonym of novelty, progress, freedom, so, I most definitely hope that the old buildings will be replaced with some new architectural ideas.
