.40 kilometres south of Gothenburg, on a peninsula, you'll find one of Sweden's largest attractions, a beautiful manor house in the Elizabethan style. The house, erected 1898-1904, fascinate thousands of visitors every year. While the front make you think of the 16th century and the Tudor era, the inside is a brilliant example of Art Nouveau and craftsmanship in the spirit of William Morris. The manor also conceals a comfort far above the standard. The house was heated by a piped hot air system, in spite of the many fireplaces. The three bathrooms were fitted with showers and sunken baths and the estate had its own electricity generator. In order to keep the wall-to-wall carpets clean, a horse-drawn vacuum cleaner was pulled around the outside of the house and the thick hoses were pushed into the rooms through the windows.
Together with the young architect Lars Israel Wahlman, Blanche Dickson created a unique environment at Tjolöholm with the manor house, estate workers' village and church. The beautiful park, the manor house, the church and the wagon museum are open to the public. Many also visit just to stroll the grounds around the castle; others come to bathe. There are also possibilities to take a cup of coffe or to eat lunch at the estate. You can also hire the manor house or other buildings for private dinners or weddings
