More info has come out from the Japanese government about this project, the new tower by Mori Trust on the former Akasaka Twin Towers site.

The tower will be 210m tall, construction will start in 2019, it will be completed 5 years later.

We can assume more detailed renders will come within a year. Also, funny how the ATT New Tower is conveniently omitted in the view of the current renders. I wonder if something else is coming? As I previously said:

MT could acquire the entire block and medical clinic to build another tower. Alternatively, it could sell the building to another developer assembling and redeveloping the block.
According to the site plan, the clinic is indeed part of the redevelopment, as well as an apartment house to the southwest.

MT still could acquire the entire block with the ATT New Tower for more land and space for another tower. Furthermore, the stretch of road from Roppongi Dori to the north end of the block could be eliminated, or rerouted as an automobile entry for a driveway loop like in Marunouchi Trust City. If it's eliminated altogether, the small east-west road at the north end of the block could serve that purpose. Of course, I'm not sure how the street network could be affected. Also, I'm not sure if zoning would permit such an intensity of uses, although Ark Hills and Akasaka Intercity AIR across the street may have been granted waivers.
5 years for the construction?!?
I know I've asked a similar question about other big projects in Tokyo and why they have such a huge duration of completion and I've been told that it's a matter of legislature of buying the land and so on. But in this case it's written "construction starts", so it's not about legislature and bureaucracy, it's about the physical construction. 5 years it's just an immense duration for a normal building.
Is there a chance this building will reach its last floor before 2024?

It will be topped out earlier, but this tower will be fully completed in 2024.

As we see similar building times with other similar buildings in Japan it's pretty much standard. Although I would say this one is a bit longer then most of the other projects right now. The schedule will be something like this, if this starts in mid 2019 it will take a half year for the demolition of the underground floors and foundations of the previous buildings, then a year for the foundations = late 2020, 6 months underground floors = mid 2021, grow until late 2022, complete the building until mid 2023, then work things up in the interior and the public space around the tower late 2023, with a grand opening in early 2024. That's just over 4 years of actual construction, again pretty standard for Japan.

This project is supposed to start this month, but there's still plenty demolition work to do. The parking was on top of the ground floor of the old buildings, the underground floors will have to be demolished first before the construction can start.

Couldn't they just start working on this during all that time ?.... The parking is not in use, so it's dead weight. It could have made the construction period shorter. They need to speed up on this project for real...
It's not just the demolition of the underground floors, which will need to be done before they can fully start the construction. There are also still 2 buildings to be demolished, the 2 on the right of this picture (one with the telecom mast).

We will see when the construction of the main tower will start.

There are still 4 buildings to be demolished:
The whitish one next to the NTT tower (which will stay), the beige residential building and the white low-rise both on the upper left corner of the plot, and finally the small one next to the "forest", near the bottom edge of the picture. That last one will be demolished between july and october, I don't know about the other ones.

Hahaha! I don't know... for the last tenants to go, maybe?

Construction companies are just too busy anyway, with the olympic. Not much will happen on this project before fall.

It's the always a bit confusing period at the end of the demolition and the start of construction of the new foundations.

The start of construction was planned on 01/15, but we haven't seen any confirmation from Mori Trust about this.

It's insane how thick highrise developments in Japan are! This "modest" building (210m, 43F) will have roughly the same floor area than the Empire State Building (443m,102F) at 210,000 sqm. This shows how important functionality and conveniency are for the Japanese.

Looks like the working render. How much do you want to bet the back side facing a residential tower will have no windows like the Kamiyacho Trust Tower? It appears to be a zoning or building code requirement, or gentleman's agreement over privacy concerns.
