I am very surprised by Germany and Mexico - the US as well... but it's the conglomeration of natural sites and man-made structures I guess. Thought Greece is ranked higher.

Which ones did you visit? ;)

^^ Regarding Mexico only 2 are natural places. 10 are cities (Mexico City among them) and the rest prehispanic ruins. ;)

NEWS OF TODAY: We got a 7th!!! The Vineyards of Lavaux

the thing with UNESCO World Heritage Sites is they are a work in progress, thence the list isnt exactly representative of world culture and history. Places especially in Asia and Europe still have a long way to go to be listed, notably China, India and Italy, the latter claiming 50 percent of the worlds artwork. Moreover there are great cultural creations being made these past few decades that are still wiating for age to make them listable.

Also places like the ancient city of Pagan in Myanmar, filled with thousands of 700-1200 year old temples are ignored as the criteria stipulate the buildings in question can only be restored professionally (wheras the Myanmarese govt has done a shoddy job). Thus one of the worlds truly great wonders on a par with Angkor or the Taj Mahal, will remain unlisted for the next few decades.

Similarly tens of thousands of ancient towns and villages across China, some of them millennia old, may never be listed (nor protected) as there are just too many of them.

That would be the end of humankind - and the total decline of its culture. How can someone only come up with ideas like that????!!!!! - It proves that the cultural understanding in some parts of the world is already lost in constant entertainment and superficial lifestyle :eek:hno:

Next would be Literature Nobel Prize for Paris Hilton's memories...
