Top 100 Nigerian companies?

18634 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Naijaborn
G'day mate

What are the top 100 Nigerian companies by revenues for the year 2008?

Isn't Alhaji Aliko Dangote the richest Nigerian? Is his Dangote group's revenues in excess of $3 billion yet? What are some of the other richest companies from Nigeria as measured by revenues?

I'd like to see some sources too. Much thanks. I am just curious to learn about your country and so don't take it the wrong way.

Cheers.

As for the revenue of top 100 companies in Nigeria for 2008, is going to be hard to get online and I think maybe some Nigerian forumers can help with that.

Alhaji Dangoti is Nigerian richest man according to Forbes list with over 3 billion dollars in excess, follow by another billionaire Otedola( a little is known about his businesses). I don't know of any regarding richest companies from Nigeria as measured by revenue, yet the banking industry seems to be measured based on asset. Some Nigerian banks are doing well in that area. Some have asset well over 20 billion dollars not to mentioned the larger ones.

I don't have any source maybe the Nigerian stock exchange website will have some info. I have being curios too about the country.

Cheers, pal!
Any sources would have been helpful. Thanks anyway.
You are welcome. Anyway you can get information about companies in Nigeria HERE
I don't know if this is what you are looking for but it's the best I can do. This list is cribbed from African Business magazine's top 200 for 2009. I suspect there is a Nigerian magazine that does something similar for Nigeria only but it might not be online. But you can get an idea of the top 30 Nigerian companies.

What about the Nigerian public oil company? It's should be among the largest companies in the country.

Lack of transparency and corruption makes NNPC's true worth in disrepute.

Even if NNPC produces a balance sheet, no one can really attest to the integrity of the figures in it.

That maybe true, still, it can be among top Nigerian companies.
NNPC is not on the list because it's not a public traded company. I forgot to mention that the list only includes publicly traded companies. The biggest companies in Nigeria are not on the list. They would be the telecommunications companies.

The biggest company on the list is the Senegalese company Sonatel (It's listed as Cote D'Ivoire but that's a typo) but Globacom Nigeria has more mobile subscribers than Sonatel. I'm sure it is be the biggest private owned company and biggest company in Nigeria. MTN is bigger but it's South African.

What about some indiginous oil companies Like the ones of the billionaire Otedola?

His public traded company OandO Plc is listed at number 32. He has privately held company Zenon oil which controls 95% of the diesel and kerosene market in Nigeria is not. It's more or less a monopoly. I think this company brings in more revenue than OandO Plc.

Femi has no interest in Oando (formerly Unipetrol). Oando is majority-owned by Oil and Ocean (Messrs Tinubu, Boye and Okoloko). Rather, Femi Otedola (through Zenon) holds the majority stake in the publicly-traded African Petroleum (AP).

Some of Nigeria's biggest indigenous businesses are privately-held.

Apart from Femi Otedola's Zenon Oil and Gas Ltd, Seaforce Shipping (which owns and manages a modern tanker fleet), and FO Properties (real estate), Aliko Dangote's holdings are mostly private (apart from Dangote Flour Mills and Dangote Sugar, that were each publicly-listed in the last couple of years), while Femi Adenuga's Globacom, Conoil (upstream and downstream) and ETB bank, are all privately-held.

I had no idea AP merged with Zenon Oil. I kept wondering how Forbes declared him a billionaire since they only use public companies to calculate the list and couldn't see Zenon, so I assumed OandO PLc was his company as well. My bad.

Regarding Conoil PLC, it has been listed on the NSE since 1989 and is number 44 on the list above with a market value of $187 million. It ain't exactly Globacom.

The publicly-listed Conoil plc is only the downstream subsidiary.

Conoil plc was formerly NOLCHEM (Eagle) before privatization, and like Chevron's (Texaco) and ExxonMobil's (Esso) downstream subsidiaries, it is an oil marketing company with relatively small capitalization in Nigeria. On the other hand, the upstream subsidiary, Conoil Producing (that was formerly known as Consolidated Oil Limited), which explores and operates several (small- to modest-sized) fields in Nigeria and the JDZ with Sao Tome, is privately-held by Mr. Adenuga and is worth considerably much more.
The insurrance companies are not into the range of Nigerian 100 top companies. IGIE insurance company advertised on CNN looks promising to me.

Insurance companies are in the top 100. IGI is Nigeria's most capitalized Insurance company. It's a private company but from what I can see, if it ever went public, it would definitely be on the list of top 50 companies in West Africa. They have bought into many insurances companies across East and West Africa.

Africa is different from Europe and America. In those places, all big companies are PLCs. Not so in Africa where a lot of the biggest companies are still privately held.
Sorry, I mean IEI!

For the capitalization of Nigerian banks some are supposed to be in the forbes list and am yet to see any. But, I think the measure is largely based on market values rather than general assets of those banks or companies on the list.
