Top 500 African companies?

4501 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  VegaM
Good day mates

I heard a lot about Jeune Afrique's top 500 largest African companies ranking but couldn't find it. Does anybody know where I can find it for the years 2007 and 2008?

I only found out that SONATRACH from Algeria is the largest company in Africa and that's all really.

Also there is the top 200 banks in Africa rankings published by Jeune Afrique too. Does anybody know what the top 200 banks in Africa are for the years 2007 and 2008?

I hope it's freely available and one doesn't have to have a paid subscription to Jeune Afrique to obtain this list.

BTW, if there is a top 500 ranking of the largest African corporations/companies other than Jeune Afrique, I'd be glad to take a look at them. Kindly provide your source(s) with translations, if applicable.

I'm just curious why it's so hard to find such data.

Thanks in advance mates. Cheers!

Dear Ugandan friend, Although MTN is a formidable company in Africa ...when it is taken as a whole, the realty is different when you look at individual countries.

MTN Uganda has 4 million http://wirelessfederation.com/news/14945-mtn-uganda-plans-an-investment-of-us133mn/

Safaricom has around 14 Million in Kenya's 18 Million subscribers.

Safaricom's IPO was the biggest IPO ever in the history of Africa and any company in the Southern Hemisphere ..it raked near $8 Billion(by the thens dollar)-Bigger than even most American companies could dream (remember that google raked $2.5 billion). Some of the money was an oversubscription.

So..please get the facts right.

I saw Royal Caribbean at no. 10 as a Liberian Company and I thought Forbes had gone on crack. I did some research and saw its headquarters are in Miami but their ships sail under the Liberian and Norwegian flags.

They were sued in the nineties for dumping waste into the ocean and other environmental charges in 6 US Courts. That was then they threw in the argument that they were a Liberian company to absolve themselves of prosecution and signed a deal with the Liberian government to put the flags on the cruise ships.

This totally threw me off. Now that I get it, I'm just laughing.
SAB Miller and Anglo American are considered British companies in most rankings i have seen maybe because they transferred their primary listing to London.

true. Africa Business though uses a different logic. If you are listed on the local stock exchange of an African country and most of the business is from that country, since their calculations of market value is from the capitalization on the SE, they classify you from that country. Though I disagree with it, that's how they calculated it.

You also see companies like Eco Bank Nigeria, Standard Bank Kenya listed as companies of the local vicinity when they are subsidiaries of companies from Togo and South Africa respectively.
Mennnnnnnnnnnnnnn....I never thought there wont be any Nigeria company there.

Its just Nigerian company advertising on CNN and sponsoring all African programs this days...

I guess Nigeria still have to move up, but come to think of it...Nigeria is trying to bring along is western countries and I guess this asnt been easy. Most of this countries listed are just doing things for their interest and not the neighbours....with a country like South Africa, by now...the southern countries should be on the list also.
SA is probably the biggest African investor on the continent Standard Bank,MTN,Shoprite are the most prominent in that regard and there are others like Massmart with their Makro Stores ,Super Group and the whole lot. This is about scale and SA companies have it and its difficult for countries with 12 million people with low per capita income to make it on that list. With that said though SA is the biggest African investor on most of the continent.

guys why do u fieeeeewn according to the population of 4 million Mtn subscribers in uganda MTN is big, if it had 8 million like safari com it would be the biggest OK we consider % MTN Uganda is the biggest
uganda we have five mobile telecommunications and Kenya has 3 or 2 , and yet they make huge profits look at Warid telecoms, its new but it alarmed the warid investor the way it caught up now its ranked the second according to customer care balance.in only a month warid had 800,000 subscribers which is great profit.so Mtn is big
and ugandans love to have many thing that's is Wat we call variety
