Nothing is sure until the ministry of interior releases their press conference at 8 on Qatar TV
Aljazeera TV: Death of 19 including 13 children at a fire in a shopping center in the Qatari capital.

Ministry of interior: Death of 2 civil defense members, 13 children and 4 school teachers that were with them during a kindergarten filed trip.

Could we please - out of respect to those who have lost children or loved ones - not have the pictures of the dead in the thread. The pictures serve no purpose, we know the extent of this tragedy...

I am so frustrated, furious and sad all at the same - and without knowing any details about the exact cause of this tragedy it has given me severe reason to think about the attitude towards safety that we all display in this country, whether in traffic, at the work place or at home... Tragedies like this are (should be) avoidable with the proper emergency design, emergency plans, training of staff, passive and active fire fighting measures.
I do so hope that the contributing factors and root causes of this tragedy are uncovered and openly shared to help us avoid aything similar in the future.

Horrible news, truly heart wrenching. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all of those affected, I can't even begin to imagine how they must feel right now.

Yes I second that. The way that this whole tragedy has been dealt with is a disaster.

I'm not currently in Doha, is there any official statement on how the fire started yet? Am I correct in assuming it was based near the food court area?

They still dont know how the fire started. But, the nursery that burned had no exit, they had to break the roof to get in and rescue some people.

The nursery (gympanzee) for what I know has 2 entrances/exits, one towards the canal and the other near Nike and the other sport shops. Apparntally there was a staircase that collapsed and made everything harder, the fire department had to access the nursery through the roof.

Ministry of interior stated that there were no proper exit and fire/emergency plans and maps available so they had to find other solutions.

One of the parents lost 3 children today :(

I'm speechless... I only hope that this is taken as a wake up call.

This is a much needed slap in the face of the security measures in Qatar. Deep condolences to all those who lost their relatives, it really is a tragedy.

I don't even know who to blame anymore. The ignorance of the mall's architect? The "was6a" that got this nursery to open without proper emergency exist? The stupid media that had people waiting for 8 hours to find the news? The people who were in the mall ignoring the fire alarms? I don't even know!

Besides, we shouldn't be blaming the fire exits in the nursery, hardly any safety measures are taken anywhere in the country! I mean if something as modern as villaggio has NO MAPS of fire exists, what should we expect from older buildings? They should do a complete sweep of everything in Qatar and train every single worker in any organisation how to act in case the fire alarm rings.

You see, this is the difference between us and developed countries. Here in the UK, almost all the buildings I've been to have (fire alarm tests) every week just to ensure that the alarm is not broken, and I've probably been instructed to exit buildings because of real fire alarms more than a dozen times since I've been here! They freak out over something as small as an electricity socket outage, we don't.

All in all, this is by far the biggest disaster I have seen so far, and as amrja said, a much needed wake up call.

اللهم احفظ هذا البلد آمنا مطمئنا يارب العالمين
