Chairman of the Black Sea Euro-region Nicusor Daniel Constantinescu, Chairman of the Constanta County Council, has won the agreement for the expansion of pan-European transport corridor VIII all the way to Constanta and Tulcea.
Constantinescu, the chairman in office of the Black Sea Euro-region, told Agerpres on Friday that he won the agreement for the inclusion of the Black Sea ports of Constanta and Tulcea in the pan- European transport corridor VIII based on the arguments and documentation presented to an international conference on the Adriatic Sea and Black Sea as two protagonist Euro-regions early this week in Rome.
‘The main aim of the conference was territorial cooperation between the two Euro-regions and identifying joint projects for supporting and harmonising the economic and social development of the communities included in the two regions.
Because we pointed to real interest on the part of the delegations of both regions in pan-European transport corridor VIII, which links together the Adriatic and Ionian regions with Balkan regions as well as the Black Sea countries, we provided arguments backing up the request for the expansion of this multi-modal transport way all the way to Constanta and Tulcea.
The initial route of this corridor travelled the Bari-Brindisi-Durres-Tirana-Skopje-Burgas¬Varna axis,’ said Constantinescu.
Corridor VIII is a multi-nodal transport system that follows an east-west axis of sea and river ports, airports, railways, providing substantial increase in the mobility of people and goods as a primary connection between the eastern and the western parts of the continent.
‘In its extended version, Corridor VIII will lead to improved relations between the Adriatic and the Black seas, as officials of both Euro-regions believe this action could translate into a first joint project that could be considered a development priority, as the declaration for the initiation of the expansion agreement to include Constanta and Tulcea has been signed,’ said Constantinescu.
