The amount which was allotted for the widening of the Ullor-Kazhakuttom stretch as a prelude to the Monorail work was diverted for Kozhikode Monorail preilminary fund which became a hue and cry raised by the local people's representatives. The expalantion given by the Minister was that it is just an 'temporary adjustment'.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One more transportation system -- Maglev technology which uses magnetic force to suspend, levitate and guide vehicles -- is being actively considered for solving the traffic woes of the city.

Along with proposals for mono rail and metro rail, a proposal to use Maglev technology for setting up a mass rapid transport system within the city was put forth by Korean experts before a high-level meeting convened by the chief minister here on Monday.

Representatives of Hyundai Rotem company, that visited the chief minister and later took part in the high-level meeting, made a presentation on the advantages of Maglev technology. After going through the presentation, chief minister Oommen Chandy suggested experts to find out the most suitable mode of urban transport for the capital city. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation chief advisor E Sreedharan was also present at the meeting.

"The three technologies are being actively considered. We will look for the cost effective, sustainable technology which has already been successfully implemented in other parts," said transport minister Aryadan Mohammed. He said there would not be any doubt that the city would get a rapid transport system and the suitable technology would be decided soon.

Sources told TOI that the majority of people's representatives and bureaucrats who were present at the meeting were of the opinion that monorail was the ideal system for the capital city. "The city is not big for a metro and not a guinea pig to be experimented with Maglev, which doesn't have a working model anywhere in India," said an official.

The meeting also decided to examine the possibility of extending the south end of the first phase of monorail from Thampanoor to Pappanamcode. The feasibility study report suggested that the first phase should come up in 22.8km connecting Pallippuram and Thampanoor. However, E Sreedharan asked officials to extend the project till Pappanamcode, covering five more kilometres to the south.

Confusion on how Thiruvananthapuram should commute

With each week witnessing the mooting of a new technology for the proposed mass rapid system in the capital, the capital's mass rapid transport project is fast taking the confusion track. Along with monorail and metro rail projects already under consideration, Monday's high-level meeting suggested Maglev technology too for the city.

The confusion about the type of rapid transport system is being created deliberately, doubt sources. "There were allegations that the government shows more interest in the Kozhikode monorail project and funds of Rs 140 crore have already been set aside for project," said a source who attended the meeting on Monday. According to him, the case of Thiruvananthapuram is straight and simple. "The city is ideal for a monorail project. The ridership is optimum and land acquisition will be minimal. I don't know why the confusion is created further," he said.

In fact, the state government had decided to probe the possibility of a mono rail project for the city a year back and had entrusted Natpac with the feasibility study. The Natpac team completed the study in a time-bound manner and submitted a detailed report on how to implement a monorail project in Thiruvananthapuram that will connect Pallippuram to Balaramapuram. Based on that report, the government decided to implement the first phase of the project for 22.8 km which connect Pallippuram and Thampanoor.

A proposal submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation that the feasibility of metro rail too needs to be probed in the city started a debate on the ideal mode of transport for the capital. With Maglev too in the probable list, a decision will be tougher now.

Maglev project: Hyundai Rotem representatives visit CM


Representatives of Hyundai Rotem Company, Korea today visited CM and detailed the Maglev Train Project which uses the technology of magnetic which they wish to implement in the capital.

This project was submitted before CM as an alternative to monorail and metro rail projects. The project was detailed at a meeting convened by CM to discuss the monorail project. Ministers Aryadan Muhammad, V S Sivakumar, DMRC Chairman E Sreedharan, MLAs Muraleedharan, M A Vahid, R Selvaraj were also present.

CM said that all these projects should be evaluated and the best project be selected for the capital city.

^^ As the good bard would say "There is something rotten in the state of Denmark". Mr. E. Sreedharan seems to be pushing MagLev (Hyundai-ROTEM). Started doing it for Kochi, now for Trivandrum.

(I kind of understand the link. Hyundai ROTEM was the supplier of Rolling stock for DMRC Phase 1 & 2). It could be just familiarity with the supplier?

Earlier, I wasnt sure why Mr. E. Sreedharan would advocate Hyundai-ROTEM maglev this much. Could be vendor confidence or genuinely interested in their technology too.

I do not think it is about money - with his track record, there would be much more straightforward methods of making money, if that was the intent, IMHO.

Monorail plans stuck in options


The state government seems to be spoilt for choice in its search for a mass transport system for Thiruvananthapuram .

The options have started to unfold ever since NATPAC concluded that a conventional monorail was best suited for a medium-sized city like Thiruvananthapuram.

The alternatives, all of them suggested by ‘Metroman’ E. Sreedharan, range from a Light Rail Transit System to the exotic Maglev system.

Just when the government looked like zeroing in on a conventional monorail, Mr Sreedharan set the cat among the pigeons by suggesting a Kochi-style metro for Thiruvananthapuram.

It is another matter that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had stated in 1996 that a monorail was ideal for the city.

The mono versus metro rail debate settled in favour of the former. A metro rail, it was found, is advisable only for a city with a per hour per direction (PPD) passenger traffic of 40,000 or more, like Bangalore or Chennai. Thiruvananthapuram has a PPD of less than 8,000.

A Light Rail Transit System was the other alternative mooted by Mr Sreedharan. An LRTS was easy to construct, the cost was also comparable to a monorail. But, experts found that a monorail was environmentally sound and operationally smoother.

Sreedharan’s latest suggestion is the Maglev system, a mode of transportation which uses magnetic levitation to suspend, guide and propel vehicles.

It is a high-powered system that can accelerate and decelerate faster than a monorail. It is also computer-controlled. However, Maglev is a technology that has not yet been perfected.

The first Maglev system introduced in Birmingham, Britain, in 1984 was closed in 1995 because the system was found to be unreliable.
