UST Global announces Rs 500 cr expansion plan
Monday, 22 October , 2007, 18:21

Thiruvananthapuram: UST Global, a California-based IT firm that has its Indian headquarters at Technopark here, Monday announced expansion plans involving an investment of $130 million (about Rs 500 crore).

Speaking to reporters here, Sajan Pillai, president and chief operating officer of the company, said the development strategy would be rolled out in three phases.

"We are building our own campus at the 36 acres that Kerala government has given us inside Technopark. After it is completed, we would have 1.3 million sq. ft. of campus that would employ 10,000 professionals," said Pillai.

UST Global began its operations in 1999. Today it is the biggest software employer in Kerala with a total business of $250 million (about Rs 1000 crore) last fiscal.

Currently UST Global employs 5,500 professionals, out of which close to 3,500 works at Technopark.

"Our expansion plans include investments of $60 million, $40 million and $30 million in the first, second and third phases, respectively. We expect our total revenues to touch $500 to $650 million by 2009," added Pillai.

Pillai said the company works for 42 Fortune 500 companies, which is expected to increase to 75 in the next two years.

Gate Way of Asia

Lol, none of us are building a $ 1.2 billion project! But, you are right, the Vizhinjam port, like say the Vallarpadam project, will directly employ less people than say a feeder port like Cochin. However, with the lowest container rates available, a deep-water transshipment port is also a magnet for SEZs. Dubai is a clear example of this. :)

By making Indian exports more competitive - through reducing shipping costs by as much as $ 400 per TEU - the port will help Indian exporters expand their business and thus create tens of thousands of jobs, not just in Kerala but across the country. :)
............ and this is how, Trivandrum is going to be the Gate Way of Asia.

cheers

Any news abt Infy campus?

Have not heard about INFYs plans for some time. Are they still stuck on the petrol station issue?

Regarding Telecom City, I would have thought that having all IT companies around Kazhakoottam would have been a better idea. For the telecom city, I would have thought that some place near Karakulam Keltron campus would have been a better choice.

Are there any expansion plans for the Kinfra Apparel park, or plans for a similar facility? Also, any updates on the re-use of Keltron Counters land near Sreekariyam for other purposes?

Thanks,
Vinod

Kerala IT sector to get big

www.gulf-times.com

By Ashraf Padanna

Information technology infrastructure in Kerala will witness tremendous growth in the next three years, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said here yesterday.
“Several projects, both the government and private initiatives, are coming up throughout the state,” he said while inaugurating the new 450,000-sq ft campus of the IBS Software Services, a leading global provider of new-generation IT solutions to the travel, transportation and logistics industry, at Technopark here.
Dubai’s Tecom Investments is developing a 350-acre Smart City while Sobha Developers has started work on the 400-acre Hi-Tec city in Kochi. These two projects alone are expected to create 150,000 jobs.
Besides, the state government has announced a 500-acre Techno City to be built in Thiruvananthapuram and a contract had been awarded to a Malaysian consortium to develop a similar facility in Kozhikode.
The Cochin International Airport is developing an IT Park within its complex while major players like HDIL have announced a number of projects to build IT infrastructure in the state.
“The investment profile of the state has changed drastically and we receive a lot of inquiries these days for setting up new projects. Unlike Bangalore or Hyderabad, these are not concentrated in a single city,” Achuthanandan who also holds the IT portfolio said.
The IBS facility Achuthanandan inaugurated in the presence of former chief minister Oommen Chandy who took major initiatives to attract investors in the sector, is the first of the four blocks on the company’s campus spread over 5.26 acres within Technopark.
“We are planning similar campuses in all the 14 districts of the state and it won’t be limited to certain pockets. We are looking at a decentralised development of the IT industry in the state,” the chief minister said.
With a built-up area of 450,000 sq ft, the campus will accommodate over 4,000 professionals.
“Besides government support, the excellent infrastructure available at the Technopark here and Infopark in Kochi has encouraged us to maintain Kerala as the hub for our India operations,” V K Mathews, chairman of IBS, said. “The state is emerging as a key IT destination and IBS’ growth over the last decade is testimony to our belief in Kerala.”
IT majors Wipro, Infosys and TCS are also building similar campuses in the state.
The IBS India operates out of 200,000sq ft of office space in three buildings in the Technopark and two buildings in Infopark.
“This campus here marks a beginning for the next level of our aggressive growth plans, as we aim to grow into a Rs10bn company by 2010. We also have plans to set up other campuses within Kerala, in Kochi and Kozhikode, and to open development centres outside the state,” Mathews said.
Meanwhile, UST Global, a California-based IT firm that has its Indian headquarters at Technopark here, yesterday announced expansion plans involving an investment of $130mn (Rs5bn).
Sajan Pillai, president and chief operating officer of the company, said the development strategy would be rolled out in three phases.
“We are building our own campus at the 36 acres that Kerala government has given us inside Technopark. After it is completed, we would have 1.3mn sq ft of campus that would employ 10,000 professionals,” Pillai said.
UST Global began its operations in 1999. Today it is the biggest software employer in Kerala with a total business of $250mn last fiscal.
Currently it employs 5,500 professionals, of which close to 3,500 work at Technopark.

MORE ON UST GLOBAL

At a press conference here on Monday, Sajan Pillai, president of the company; Arun K. Narayanan, vice-president; and Alexander Verghese, local head, said the campus, with a built-up area of 16-lakh sq.ft, would be rolled out in three phases.

They said the first phase, with a built-up space of six-lakh sq.ft and a capacity to accommodate 5,000 professionals, would be ready within 12 months. Nearly 3,100 IT professionals were already working in the company unit here. With the proposed first phase expansion plan, UST Global would become the single largest hub for an IT company in the State. The investment plan for the first phase was about $ 60 million (about Rs. 240 crore).

The second phase to be completed by 2010 would have a built-up area of four-lakh sq.ft and a seating capacity for 3,000 professionals. The proposed investment plan for the second phase was $ 40 million (about Rs. 160 crore).

They said the third phase had been designed to have a seating capacity for 2,000 professionals and it would have a built-up area of three-lakh square feet. This phase, with an investment plan of $ 30 millions (about Rs. 120 crore), was expected to be completed by 2011. As much as 3,000 sq.ft of the built-up area would be used for recreational facilities and other amenities

Pillai, who pointed out the scarcity of fine-tuned talents as one of the major problems being faced by IT companies in the state, also announced the UST Global’s decision to set up a finishing school — ‘UST Academy’ — within the new campus.

UST Global takes hub-and-spoke route

Sanjeev Ramachandran / Chennai/ Thiruvananthapuram October 23, 2007

UST Global, a Kerala-based provider of end-to-end IT services and BPO solutions, is adopting the hub-and-spoke model to expand its presence in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

According to Sajan Pillai, president and COO, UST Global, the company would soon set up centres across tier-II and tier-III towns of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as per the plan.

The centre in Thiruvananthapuram would act as the hub, with the proposed centres in different smaller towns being the spokes. The idea of bringing jobs to where the talented professionals are will materialise with the realisation of this plan,” he said.

UST Global, which has 42 Fortune 500 companies in its client list, will also have its exclusive campus in a few years. This would be in addition to its current centre at the Technopark campus. The ground-breaking ceremony of the $130-million campus, which will come up adjacent to the Technopark, will be held on October 24, 2007.

“The campus will be set up in three phases. While the first phase of the project would involve an investment of $60 million, $40 million and $30 million will be infused in the second and third phases respectively. The first phase of the 36-acre campus, which has already been accorded approval by the Technopark authorities, will be completed by the first quarter of 2009, and we expect the campus to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2011, Pillai said.

The new campus as well as the expansion plans have spurred the company to go in for a massive recruitment drive, which has been kicked off. The company's existing facility at Technopark currently houses 3,000-odd professionals. Close to 6,000 professionals would be required additionally as and when the new campus comes up.

UST Global has also lined up plans to go public by the first quarter of 2009, if the conditions are conducive at that time, Pillai said.

Stating that a new centre will also be opened at Kochi in the beginning of next month, Pillai said the centre would employ 300 professionals initially. The number will be scaled up to 2,000 in two years' time, he added.

Reliance Fresh is ready near Passport Office. I saw it when driving through that area last week. It was a surprise for me. The signage 'Reliance Fresh' was partly covered as if it was waiting to be unveiled.

Poojappura park no more out of bounds

IF not the roads, the parks in the city are definitely enjoying some good time. The latest to get a makeover is the Poojappura island park, which was opened to the public on Monday.

It is as part of a beautification project meant to develop parks and traffic islands in the city that the Corporation renovated the Poojappura park. The Kowdiar park, the Poonthura park and Sreekanteswaram park were similarly renovated and landscaped and opened to public in the last few months.

While the Corporation had taken up the civil works, the State Bank of Travancore had sponsored the landscaping. A total of Rs 20 lakh was spent for the renovation.

The landscaping was done by Perfect Agri Management company.

Situated near the Swathi Thirunal mandapam and Sree Chithira Thirunal stadium, the Poojappura island park was closed to public earlier. The residents of Poojappura had been demanding the renovation of the park for sometime as it would give them a breather in the busy area.

‘‘We will complete the renovation work of two more parks, the Sree Chithira Thirunal park at Fort and Golf Links park, in a matter of a few weeks.
We have called for private participation as was done in the case of these parks so that maintenance does not pose a problem,’’ said Satheeshkumar, Corporation Town Planning committee chairman.
