DOHA: The Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Ruwais ports are to be deepened to facilitate easy movement of dhows. The contract for work at the Wakrah port was signed on December 15 last year and the project is expected to be completed by August. Channels through which dhows usually navigate will be widened.

Speaking to The Peninsula yesterday at the Wakrah site, acting head of the ports section of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and project manager Abdul Aziz Ali Al Delayel said: "A contract was signed for the development of Al Khor port on January 15 while we are yet to tender for Al Ruwais port."

The cost of the Wakrah project is QR44.4m and the port projects are being carried out at the behest of the Customs and Ports General Authority, he said. The depth of the waters off the port will be increased, in part, because many of the dhows are left stranded during low tide. Depth will be increased up to 1.5km from the port.

He stated that the dhows were being shifted from one spot to another as the dredging work at Wakrah goes on. However, once the project is over, they will have a permanent place where they can berth. The dhow workers and owners have been amenable to the arrangement as work goes on. At present, there are 300 dhows in Wakrah.

Abdul Aziz said: "There was a need to resolve the issues of the dhows. There has always been a problem of accommodating them. In fact, during the design stage, we did not have a high number of dhows, but due to the transfer of the vessels from Doha Port, the number had doubled."

There was a slight delay over environmental considerations of the project, particularly the disposal of the soil. Said Abdul Aziz: "The soil excavated will be unloaded at a location 6km from here. The soil will thus be stockpiled for use in future projects."

According to Mahmoud Khalil Mahmoud, the managing director of Mubarakia Marine Services Company, which has been entrusted with carrying out the project, the work at Wakrah is being carried out in two phases. While right now, the land-based excavations and such are going on, in the second phase, the marine portion will come into play. "A barge-mounted excavator will then be brought in," he said. At the end of it all, the dhows will have a permanent `parking' facility.

One of the problems in carrying out the project at Wakrah is that the soil is hard, said Abdul Aziz. The two officials also said that even though the depth will be increased, it would not be enough to allow bigger ships to ply in the waters.

Good news for you Wakrawi

the good news ya azizi are when they start building the corniche that we, residents of al-wakrah, were promised 20 years ago.

Wakra-wi-bas, where was the proposed Wakra Cornishe? How long is it? The Wakra coastline is very very bad at the moment as it is not organized. I am sure with a little money injected, it can look fabulous.

wi al-khor malha rab?

albarakah fi hassan al-mohanadi.

regarding al-wakrah courniche. the plans were ready almost from mid-80's to build a courniche that streches south from al-wakrah port up towards abu funtas desalination station. it was supposed to be a replica of doha courniche. but the project was put on hold many times for many reasons (lack of funds, periority projects, bad al-wakrah municipality berauecracy, un-effecient municipality officials), until it was revived by a report in al-raya article few years back. the CMC (almajlis albaladi) member for al-wakrah even went a head and decided to name it Al-raya courniche "where pelicans will be wandering around"....ay wallah!

but still, nothing was turned into reality. it's ok, we're not complaining, as the holy quran say "in allah ma3 alsabreen" .

Wow, that would've been a good idea! We need something like this in the south--maybe between Wakra and Messaid. But i dont think it is going to happen since the cornishe is very expensive to make and that Lusail, the Pearl, Waab City are all top priority projects currently in the make.
