This deserves its own thread now that the government has allocated money in the state budget.

Government Announces New $150m Cultural Centre Theatre

Already Australia’s busiest theatre complex, QPAC is set to become the nation’s largest with the Queensland Government announcing a new $150 million state of the art 1500-1700 seat theatre for Brisbane.

The Premier announced an investment of $125 million towards its construction on the Playhouse Green site at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) with the bulk of the funding committed for its construction part of next month’s State Budget.

IMO unless they do an almost duplicate of what the rest of the complex looks like then it's gonna be a bomb out. Forget things like rooftop bars etc. That will bugger things up. is a rooftop bar necessary?? Let's face it. They are becoming as common as mud.

Once it was a cafe/coffee shop every few yards deemed necessary now it's rooftop bars.

If this new theatre was a stand alone then I'd be all for it being something to stand out but because they have chosen this site for it ..........

What happened to the Star Entertainment funded theatre - is that expected to still go ahead in addition to the Queensland Government funded QPAC extension?

If not, I'm afraid taxpayers have been fleeced.
I'd be interested in this to, I thought it was part of the deal.

Seems like a valid excuse. Not sure why the government make echo and crown just pay a contribution though. I'm not fussed about this being funded with taxpayer money as its nice to finally have some investment in culture. I'm sure we'll hear no end of it though from regional qld.

Oh god, I hope the proposal ends up looking nothing like either of those artist impressions!

My two cents is that, ideally, the new theatre should be something understated that should be architecturally subservient to the existing parts of QPAC. Something that presents well to Grey Street, but is as invisible from the river as possible.

I don't want it to be a straight replica of QPAC's existing architecture, but something in keeping with the materials and basic theme. Think how the brick podium on Spire fits in with the neighbouring heritage brick buildings. If they could somehow match the colour and texture of QPAC's concrete and incorporate that into the design, I would be more than happy. I'm not holding my breath for that though.

So it seems like the biggest reason to reject any plans from Star for a theater were because the sate government was concerned that the Star theater would have competed with (rather than complemented) QPAC (i.e. Star and QPAC would have fought over who gets the really big productions)

I just caught the tail end of Anna on tv last night and it appears she said that if The Star consortium wanted to chip in she certainly would not knock it back. I doubt anyone in business would do that if they didn't have to. (I could have the bull by the horns)

i would love the see the old state library as a theatre for a permanent show like cirque du soleil something like this below, plus it would make brisbane stand out from melb/sydney with all the arts/shows, star would be crazy if they haven't thought of this before with the new casino plans with what the star casino has at sydney
