I went to the annual Vesna Festival in Saskatoon this weekend... and it was a lot of fun :D... anyway, at the festival, they had information about a new building they are planning for the Ukrainian Museum, and I must say that it looks amazing!... Here is a link to the Website, and some pictures... What are your thoughts on it?

Design for the new museum:

They are currently in a different building... but this was the building they were in before their current building:

That building has since been torn down... not in good condition at all. You can see St. Georges Cathedral in the background, and the new museum will be on the other side.

Sorry if you don't understand English... maybe someone can help summarizing some of the information... I don't know Ukrainian well enough to do it (still in the process of learning).

^^ I like it. What's currently at the lot where the old one was?
I like the building too, looks to be in subcarpathian style.

Fira, right now it is just a plot of land with a sign that says "Future home of Musée Ukraina Museum"

They bought the land so no one could take it away. :) They are just raising funds for the building now.

That would make sense, as that's where a lot of Ukrainian immigrants in Saskatchewan came from way back in the early 1900s.
ANy photos from Vesna itself?
Nope, my camera died right at the beginning... I will have to buy a new battery I think :(. Doesn't seem to be holding it's charge very well. In any case, the theme this year was the Kozak's. It was pretty good :) The food was excellent of course, as was the enterntainment. 2 live bands, 2 choirs, 2 professional dance groups. Good stuff :) There was a big display for the Kozak's and the history as well including pictures and descriptions of some of the Hetman's. My mom's last name is the same as that of 2 Hetmany. :D... but I did know that already.
Hm, hope it gets built. UCAMA is right now under construction. I think this one looks better than UCAMA but this one might get pared back a bit.

Nate - thanks for the post!
How much do you catch from our conversations?
Don't be shy - go ahead and ask for translations etc. on any thread you wish - we would hate to exclude you from the forum :(

Haha, I catch very little ;)... that's why I don't really participate anymore... I come for the pictures and the little snippits of news that are in English... I may understand a few bits of news in Ukrainian... and virtually none of the Russian, which sort of makes it more difficult for me, as, unfortunately, most of the new forumers use Russian and not Ukrainian when conversing.

However, I am curious about the meaning of "Схожий на якийсь склад". I get the first part of Playmaker's post (That the building doesn't appeal to him)... but I would like to know why the building isn't appealing.

Схожий на якийсь склад = Looks like some warehouse.
It's not appealing to me because it has empty walls, it has no details and the towers are inexpressive.

As an example, here is the Puppet Theater in Kyiv. Its new building was built in 2005(!).

Yes, I agree. The puppet theatre is impressive... However, Kyiv is a city of over 3 million people... This museum is being built in a city of just 225,000 or so. And it's pretty much entirely being funded through donations. They currently have a little over $1 million raised, and over $3 million is needed for the project.

That being said, The sides don't really need to be very impressive because the building will be right between a Ukrainian Catholic Church & Rectory and the Parish hall of the church. The sides won't really be visible. As for the towers, I understand what you are getting at... but I think that they are going more for a simpler village type theme to the building, rather than a big grand museum look.

And here are photo's of the church I am talking about:

St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral

I used to love going to that church to stare at the ceilings and walls.

The church is marvelous!
Yes, I think so too :)
Nice church but I agree with Playmaker - the building it quite hideous. First of all its missing windows, secondly reminds me of chinese pagodas. Just because its Ukrainian, it does not mean it has to be folky-embroidery style.

Саскатчевань-как то по армянски звучит,это просто к слову:)

Церкви очень красивые особенно если учитывать где они находяться:cheers:
