The UKZN Science Park is an exciting planned expansion to the UKZN Westville Campus to really uplift the scale of the science and development work the university can undertake and the number of students they can accomodate.

Those renders look amazing. But it would take some *serious* funding to do anything like this, and the University's first priority is to construct a new Med School campus from scratch at the Rag grounds, near the corner of Bellair and François Roads. That alone will cost anything from R700m to R1bn. I am thus supposing this is a long-term vision for the Westville campus.

Well this seems to be further along than a new med school... they have not even appointed any architects. There has been no word since the initial scoping announcement.

Cross-post from Durban's Green thread. Just realised that the city's wind power plans talk about UKZN's Westville's campus, and the above renders do show wind power...

Sun, wind power for Durban

Durban wants to erect hundreds of solar energy panels at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and other municipal buildings, plus two large wind turbines, to encourage local companies and other municipalities to start switching to renewable energy.

The city hopes to generate about 500kW of electricity by installing solar photovoltaic panels at eight city-owned buildings, and a further 300kW of power from two wind turbines at the Westville campus of the University of KwaZuluNatal.

The buildings were selected owing to their visibility and exposure to the public.
