Okay, this is where KZN has endless game reserves, nature reserves, iSimangaliso wetlands - St Lucia; Hluhluwe, Mkhuze, Jozini, Sodwana, Ingwavuma, Manguzi, etc. We know Jozini by what used to be called Pongolapoort dam has had a fare share of investments over the years, including developing a township, building a mall, building a great resort Jozini Tiger Fish resort, apartments overlooking the scenic dam, etc. Jozini seemed more serviced by the more urban Pongola town closeby which is in the Zululand District Municipality, a self-sufficient town on its own, with both being by Swaziland-South Africa Golela border post. The region is also where the mountain range famously called Lebombo in Limpopo starts, also called uBombo, going through Swaziland, etc. It is this district where the highway connecting Durban and Maputo passes, joining N2.

It seems the local government decided to make Mkuze their seat, not sure whether the seat of uMkhanyakude or of Big-Five Hlabisa. Anyway, with this decision, it seems Mkuze has therefore been earmarked to be the Gateway to all this region (I would have thought Hluhluwe would be the choice, but perhaps there is a better reason it is Mkhuze instead).

So based on this, appreciating the many tourism offerings in this area, very expensive ones and affordable ones, and a lot of International tourists to this International Heritage site, Mkhuze decided to build a Level 3 (right?) airport, extending their old one. They did modifications and are now at Stage 03. The attached picture shows the intended plan around the airport as this rural CBD gets uplifted to an important town.
