Urban decay - Adelaide's worst

I rode past this the other day and couldn't believe its still standing. Its the old Julia Farr building in Fullarton, inner SE Adelaide and quite a nice leafy suburb except for this. What makes this even more creepy is that it used to be the "home for the incurables", basically an asylum where people with cronic disabilities and illness lived in before they died. Because of the amount of people that died in this building, urban legend has it that its haunted. Its been abandoned for years, but only in the last 5 years have the vandals got to it. Latest is a proposal to turn it into 190 retirement units, but locals have protested against it and there is a court order against its demolition, why I dont know

these are from my flickr www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/with/5063789395/

there are holes in the fences, but I didnt feel like venturing inside. Its full of graffiti and the occasional homeless person

50 metres away is the main building, which still functions as a disabilities hospice

I find urban decay interesting but basically it is revolting and should not be standing

this ends backs on to quite expensive old houses

the cross just adds to the misery of the place

Aparently security and the police have to come almost nightly, especially in school holidays as the youngsters break in and walk through it for fun

Great pictures! Always been fascinated by the grungy side of our cities.

Geez, those nimbys are crazy nowadays aren't they  What is it? Heritage?

Interesting pics though, thanks for sharing
Both buildings look vile

Cool photos though
What's just as ironic is that this place is right next to Adelaide's most exclusive suburbs such as Malvern, Hyde Park, Unley and Unley Park !
gorgeous

That always helps with buildings.
I can see the demons oozing out of that building! They are almost trying to convince you to kill somebody.
thats fucking awesome

i love old mental hospitals/asylums
The photos are good, but the building has done it's time and has to be demolished.

I'm the same. Have you ever seen the movie "Session 9"?

I'm usually quite tough skinned with scary films, but this is genuinely one of the most scary/disturbing/upsetting films I've ever seen. There was something about it that really hit a raw nerve. It's about a group of asbestos removers sent to the Danvers State Hospital in Boston (its a real place) to prepare it for redevelopment, and obviously fucked up shit happens.

Here in Melbourne I've been to the abandoned Larundel-Mont Park asylum in 2005 before it was redeveloped. At night. Scary but fascinating.

Also the now demolished Greenvale Asylum was spooky too, in a forest not far from Melbourne Airport. The sound of aircraft taking off and landing nearby this completely deserted place was strange.

Fixed Link :)
Wow, that reminds me of those shots you see of Chernobyl. Cool.

You inspired me to go there today with my camera. Only part of it has been redeveloped. A large section of the buildings are in the same state they have been for years, though I noticed the start of foundation construction outside one of them. If only these walls could talk...

And heres one of the redeveloped buildings, being used as student accomodation. Doesn't look too shabby. Im glad they didn't rip all the buildings down when it closed.

I don't have any pics, but the headquarters of the NSW Ambulance Service in Rozelle is a former psych ward at Rozelle Hospital. Minimal money spent over the years to convert it, and a really depressing HQ for an organisation of around 4000 staff. It is slated to be razed and replaced in the next year ot two though.

As for former psych hospitals that are OK, the Kirkbride Buildings on the same site, now the Sydney College of the Arts work well.....

Wow! Thanks woozoo!

Alphaville - will definitely check out that movie, thanks for the heads up.

I will have to wander around Gladesville Hospital next time I'm in that part of the world. Rozelle Hospital intrigues me as well - I had to study a play called "Cosi" in Year 12 which was set in Rozelle Hospital...
