US issues travel alert for Europe

In-light of the recent US warnings of a possible Mumbai style attack in Europe involving gunmen shooting and taking hostages in public places, what are the chances of an attack happening on Irish soil? I believe it's been widely documented that Al-Qaeda have longed to attack Ireland have active cells in the country.

I don't know what sort of anti-terrorist measures Ireland has in place but I guessing they are nowhere near as advanced as the measures the UK, Germany or France has in place. Only recently the UK practiced a Mumbai style attack in a secret exercise in Birmingham. AND have also practised dirty bombs and suicide attacks.

In Ireland a soft touch for an attack? Should we start securing our borders and actively putting armed police at high profile targets such as the UK do.

Doubt Ireland would be a target - it's not seen as an 'aggressor' against the Islamic world
More of a threat from dissidents on both sides of the border than from Islamic fundamentalists, to be honest.
Agreed. Although personally I think the word terrorist scum is more apt
I have to agree. I can't see why Ireland would be attacked or provoked for a justified reason. However I can see why it could appeal, as there are little measures to prevent terrorism (strangely enough) and the fact that it would be very unlikely the government would retaliate. I can't even see an Islamic threat in the North, even though its part of the UK. As mentioned, we have a rising increase in activity from the home-grown twats atm, they are priority.

They do, it's called MI5

When it comes to global terrorism the UK aren't going to be put at risk by having a weak (meant in a practical sense) neighbour.

Just look what happened immediately after the Twin Towers attack, the RAF began patrolling Irish airspace.

It's not widely advertised as a large section of the Irish public won't like it, but tough, needs must.

Well, Belfast was mentioned as one of the targetted cities in an Al Qaeda missive a few years ago, so lucky you're not in charge of threat assessment then, eh?
Nah it was more a case of if a hijacked airliner came into Irish airspace the RAF would be alerted and given permission to intercept it. They don't normally have any access. It's as much because it'd be in Britain's own interests as anything, any threat would be a threat to them as well.

Anyway the Gardaí and Irish Defence Forces have been dealing with terrorism for a long time so I wouldn't worry too much about our experience and capabilities. If there's one thing they should be good at by now, that's it.

...I get the feeling this is going to get messy!...
A car bomb has went off in Londonderry..... Doubt its Muslim like, more likely to be the IRA.
Extremlists have longed to attack Ireland.....

Ireland has let USAF jets bound for Iraq and Afghanistan stop/refuel at Shannon and also allowed extraordinary rendition flights.
