Saudi ACWA Power commences soil studying for building 1.5 GW thermal power plant in Syrdarya



The Saudi energy company ACWA Power has commenced the construction of a US$ 1 billion 1.5 GW thermal power plant (TPP) in the Syrdarya province, the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

In particular, the company began studying the soil before starting construction work.

A new TPP with two combined cycle plants (CCP) of H/J class with a capacity of 1.5 GW will generate up to 10 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Funding for the plant construction will be provided by ACWA Power under a public-private partnership (PPP) terms.

“The new thermal power plant will be located near the existing Syrdarya TPP and will become twice as efficient as it is equipped with modern CCP units,” the statement said.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy reported that it ACWA Power would build a 500 MW wind farm in the Navoi province under PPP terms. The power plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2022. Work has begun on identifying the potential site for the wind farm.

Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to provide US$ 23.1 million in loan to Uzbekistan



The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) will provide $ 23.1 million in a loan to Uzbekistan for the Equipping Uzbekistan Medical Institutions Providing Urologic and Hemodialysis Services Project.

In the $ 29.09 million project in 2020–2022, Uzbekistan's share is $ 5.97 million in equivalent, including $ 4.41 million in tax and customs benefits, Norma said.

The KFAED’s loan in the amount of 7 million Kuwaiti dinars, equivalent of $ 23.1 million, will be provided for a period of 26 years with a four-year grace period. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan is the executive agency responsible for the purposeful use of loans and the effective implementation of the project, and the SUE Uzmedimpeks is the counterparty to the contracts. Expenses related to servicing and repayment are covered by the State Budget.

A project implementation team of 5 people will be formed within a month. The Ministry of Health will organize call for bids to find a consulting firm to assist in the implementation of the project and purchase of medical material and equipment.

Uzbekistan receives $17 million from IDB to equip coronavirus clinics


The IDB is also ready to provide additional support to Uzbekistan. The Bank will redirect $46 million savings on infrastructure projects to equip new clinics for patients infected with the coronavirus.

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has allocated $17 million to finance the urgent procurement of medical equipment and products for new coronavirus clinics being established across Uzbekistan. This was announced during a videoconference between Uzbek Minister for investments and foreign trade and IDB President on Wednesday. The funds are allocated from the current portfolio of loans of the IDB in the Republic.
The IDB is also ready to provide additional support to Uzbekistan. The Bank will redirect $46 million savings on infrastructure projects to equip new clinics for patients infected with the coronavirus.
President of the IDB B. Hajar assured that the Bank is ready to expand assistance in this direction, including using the capabilities of its subsidiary institutions, such as the International Islamic Trade and Finance Corporation, the Islamic Corporation for Private Sector Development and others.
As a result of the conference, the parties agreed to work out additional financing from the IDB for the needs of the health care system and small and medium-sized businesses in Uzbekistan for a total amount exceeding $140 million.

The Saudi official expressed his sincere gratitude for the support of investment projects of Saudi companies and the favourable conditions created for their productive activities in our country.


President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Monday received a delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia headed by Minister of Investment Khalid al-Falih. The agenda included the further strengthening of the Uzbek-Saudi multifaceted relations.

A joint business forum held in Bukhara the day before resulted in the signing of major cooperation projects. The number of joint ventures and projects in Uzbekistan with the participation of Saudi investments has increased significantly over the past few years.
The parties also reached agreements on the preparation and implementation of new projects in the energy, oil and gas, chemical industries, including projects based on public-private partnership.

Kuwait's Jazeera Airways has received permission to operate regular flights to Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Transport said.

The agency "Uzaviation" on April 12 inked a corresponding cooperation agreement with Jazeera Airways.

The flights are to be operated on Airbus A320-214 and Airbus A320-251N aircraft.

Emirati Fund donates $27mn for construction of hospital in Nukus

The Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan Charitable Foundation has donated $27mn for the construction of a modern mother and child hospital in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan.

The relevant intergovernmental agreement was signed between the United Arab Emirates and the Uzbek government on May 26.

The new hospital, designed for 100 patients, unique in design and technical equipment, will include prenatal and maternity wards, wards for mothers and newborns, intensive care units for mothers and children, a surgical department, a hospital, outpatient and consultative diagnostic departments, laboratories.

Construction work is to be completed by the end of 2022. The new medical facility is to provide medical services to the population of the Aral Sea region.

Uzbekistan, IsDB to establish $500mn fund

The Uzbek government and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have agreed to establish a new $500mn Fund for Expanding Economic Opportunities to support projects aimed at reducing poverty and developing entrepreneurship. An agreement was reached on the sidelines of the 46th annual meeting of IsDB Board of Governors in Tashkent on September 2.

Addressing the event, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said: “It is deeply symbolic that the annual meeting of the bank is held in Tashkent. We consider this a recognition of Uzbekistan's contribution to the development of the Islamic world, as well as the consistent reforms carried out in the country over the past five years".

Uzbekistan became a member of the IsDB in 2003. The cooperation portfolio today comprises nearly 30 major investment projects totaling over $2.5bn.

Underlining the issues of overcoming the economic and social consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, Mirziyoyev expressed gratitude to the IsDB for its timely support of the country's anti-crisis measures.

An initiative has been put forward to create a trade and economic space "From West Africa to East Asia - a Green Corridor". Its implementation would contribute to the expansion of trade and investment ties, convergence, and sustainable growth of the economies of the countries.

"Today's international forum will bring our partnership within the bank to a qualitatively new level and will make a significant contribution to the general welfare of the peoples of the member states," Mirziyoyev added.
