Padmavati underpass to undergo major makeover

VADODARA: The Padmvati underpass, one of the major connections to the old city from the Raopura and Jubelibaug areas, is set for a major makeover. The underpass has exposed columns and beams presently with cobwebs on its ceiling and, at times, litter on the road below.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) plans to give a new look to the structure that has a building above it. It will be decorated with energy efficiency lightings and will space for advertising that can generate revenue.

The civic body will be using the public-private partnership mode for the project. The contractor taking up the project will have the rights to the revenue generated through advertising for 10 years. The civic body is also looking for a premium from the agency that takes up the work. A space of 1,320square feet shall be provided at the space for advertising boards.

The developer will also have to clean and maintain the site for 10 years after it comes up. Following this, the site will be handed over to the civic body.

Conducting work on the busy road will, however, be a daunting task and traffic will have to be diverted. To cover any eventuality that takes place during the work or because of an accident after the work gets over, the civic body has asked the contractor to take a third party insurance. VMC is looking for agencies that have more than five years of experience in advertising or related field for the project.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation exploring possible tram routes

This was in news in early April. The feasibility report should be out soon. I hope something materializes after the BRTS plan was scraped.

Chinese company gives presentation proposing to start tram project in Vadodara

Vadodara:A Chinese delegation gave presentation on tram project before the Vadodara Municipal Corporation(VMC) officials.

Chinese company CRRC Sifang Co Ltd gave presentation before the Municipal Commissioner, Mayor and others and proposed to start tram service on possible routes such as Airport – Chakli circle, Vadsar, Tarsali, Vaghodia Road, 25 km long ring road or Vishwamitri river front.

The Chinese delegation was anchored by Por(Vadodara) based Ashish Patel who is the CEO of Hindustan Fiber, a company that built Mahamana Express coaches.

The company officials in their presentation told VMC that tram service would not require separate lane like BRTS or Metro. A small track on regular road would be enough to run electric tram. There are 8 options in tram design ranging from 128 to 309 passenger capacity.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation examines possible tram routes

VADODARA: Officials of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) along with representatives of two private companies on Friday visited the routes where the possibility of operating trams in the city is being examined. A feasibility report regarding the project is expected to be prepared in about a month.

Sources said that the team travelled along the 40meter internal ring road. It particularly examined the bridges along the road. The team then visited the bridges along the Vishwamitri river to see banks of the river for the possibility of operating trams along the riverfront. During the meeting on Thursday, the possibility of having tram tracks along the 40-m ring road and the riverfront was discussed.

Representatives of Hindustan Fiber Glass Ltd that worked on the coaches for the Mahamana Express and CRRC Corporation Ltd from China that has expertise in making rolling stock including trams had visited the civic body’s headquarters on Thursday.

Experts from the Chinese company have also sought maps of the two possible routes to finalise the feasibility report, sources said.

Feasibility of trams for the city to be examined

VADODARA: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) along with representatives of an Indian railway coach component manufacturing company and a Chinese rolling stock manufacturer will conduct the feasibility study for a tram service in the city.

Officials of the civic body as well as the representatives of the two companies held a meeting on Friday to discuss the project.
The tram service is seen as a better alternative than metro, monorail or BRTS. Also, trams can ply on existing roads without eating into the road space.

VMC mayor Bharat Dangar said that representatives of Hindustan Fiber Glass Ltd that worked on the coaches for the Mahamana Express and CRRC Corporation Ltd from China and has expertise in making rolling stock including trams had visited VMC’s headquarters on Thursday.
“We held preliminary discussions regarding the possibility of having trams in the city. A feasibility report will now be prepared,” he said.

Sources said that a team comprising of VMC officials as well as experts from the two private companies will conduct a survey in the city on Friday. It is expected that the team will prepare the feasibility report for the tram service in a month’s time.

Presently two routes are being considered for the service. These include the 40m internal ring road and the Vishwamitri riverfront. The route is expected to be around 25km along the ring road and 20km along the riverfront.

Vadodara is a suitable contender for a modern tram. Certainly trams will be much more feasible as compared to BRT considering the relatively narrow roads.
