Hi guys just wanted to hear everyone thoughts on Hampden getting redeveloped if our bid is successful and with the continued success of our national team and club teams in Football surly the capacity must be increased. Not to mention making the arena more concert friendly as the oval shape is a bit weird for that also.

I agree with an increase in capacity for the Commonwealth Games, but at the moment we could just be going through a good patch in Scottish Football and Queens Park having a few hundred supporters for home games on average seems a bit stupid making it bigger. As for the oval shape, not to keen on it myself but its the same shape as Old Hampden. It would be nice to see Hampden at Large again so we could have an even better atmosphere, but who would be willing to foot the bill, surely it would cost a large sum of money.

Surly if London can get billions for the olimpics and we arent going that much over the top with the games. We could get cash from similar sources or even a bank as surly there would be more gigs held there and also more fans = more cash.

this has been talked about before - right here. Or else, check the forum index, there's two or three Hampden threads in there, which all say; yes it would be nice to redevelop the stadium to increase capacity and improve atmosphere but would it be cost-effective?

On the subject of atmosphere, I personally think that a full Hampden is amazing and that its a bit of a myth that the oval shape impairs the match-day experience. It may just be that the tartan army are amazing fans but i've been to a couple of cup finals there too and in my view, it compares well with Ibrox and Parkhead. Certainly better than Murrayfield. Atmosphere is such a subjective quality. I'm sure its more to do with the fans than the physical dimensions of the stadium. Not sure either that changing the format of the stadium would increase the number of gigs - a stadium gig is almost by definition lacking in intimacy whether it is staged at firhill or at hampden - its all about bums on seats that count, no?

Anyone else think the location of Hampden is just all wrong?

What do you guys think about Hampden being built somewhere like Tradeston?

I tell you what Glasgowman - that is a very good idea.

I know I know I know; Hampden and it's history - can't move it, wouldn't dare etc. And I know it'll probably never be moved from where it is. But having a giant stadium near the banks of the clyde ala many US cities on their respective riverfronts is a good idea - it brings the whole sporting experience, atmosphere and enjoyment so much closer to the city centre.

Not a bad idea at all.

Actually, I quite like that idea too - if one sees the renderings for Portsmouth's proposed stadium beside the Spinnaker tower at their harbour, it looks absolutely brilliant. Likewise the stalled project for Everton's new stadium on the docks at Liverpool looked pretty darn excellent.

Dunno where there would be room for it in Glasgow: perhaps if they'd never built the SECC, that would have been an ideal spot, but of course in the early 80's when the Queens Dock was redeveloped, nobody could have predicted that the city was ripe for an architectural and cultural renaissance, that Sky Sports and Italia 90 would arrive and make football acceptable, and that the post-Hillsborough findings of the Taylor report would render the terraces of the old Hampden obsolete. Maybe they could dynamite everything at Springfield Quay and bung it in there - how much better would that be than that shitty casino and the 'honest its not a prison' Etap hotel?

Of course, if they did build a stadium in such a prominent location then they'd have to make it much more visually interesting stadium than Hampden is - the best one can say about the current arena is that at least its unobtrusively tucked out of the way in an obscure bit of the city.

Is Hampden even viable right now?

An increase from the ground's current 52,000 capacity would be required to keep the national stadium in contention for hosting the finals of major tournaments, with Uefa currently in the process of bringing in a regulation that will insist host venues for Uefa Cup and Champions League finals from 2011 onwards must hold at least 70,000 spectators.
For this reason alone we should be looking at a capacity of at least 70000.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with. I hope they change it to a more rectangular shape, though.

Could be all talk again.

I've heard that if we go for Euro 2016 then Hampden could have 20,000 seats added on for that and the Commonwealth games which I believe could happen. At the moment we(scotland) are doing very well in euro 08 and if we keep it up the yes we should have an expansion. especailly if they do bring in that rule that European Final venues should have at least 70,000, i wish it would become a reality, I really do but at the moment i don't really see it happenin'. Give it a wee while and if we do go ahead with a Euro bid and we get the Commonwealth games, I think we may just get both. If we do then i think the SFA will look into a deffinate expansion, hopefully.

Successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Bid - Catalyst For Hampden Expansion
Posted 1:40 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

Hampden, one of the venues for a successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games bid, may undergo an expansion to increase its capacity to 70,000.

The expansion is aimed to make sure that Glasgow doesn’t miss out on more European finals and to improve the view for fans. SFA President George Peat has revealed UEFA wants grounds to have a minimum capacity of 70,000 for the 2010 finals and if Glasgow wins its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games it could force the issue.

Hampden manager David Kells has been in talks with Peat. Peat said, “one of the things that annoys me is if you’re behind the goals down at the front at Hampden you’re miles away from the pitch. I wouldn’t like to sit there. I asked David to have a good look to see what could be done to correct that. If Glasgow is successful with the Commonwealth Games things could be done then”.

He said it would be major surgery to bring Hampden down and upgrade it again. “It would be enormous expense, but you have to keep the fans happy”.

How would this work

So what would they do, can the super skeleton, dig down to make the playing area right next to the crowd and then remodel the banking to make it steeper?

Tell you what is theis ever got the light of day Hampden would be one of the most intimidating stadiums in the word.

Imagine seventy thousand mad Scots baying for the blood of the opposition, breathing right down their necks!

It woud also finally kill the prospect of a national stadium for Football AND Rugby forever imho.

well if wales can have a national stadium such as the 74,000 seater Millenium Stadium, i can't see why scotland can't. tbh i often cringe when i look at hampden park.
