Looks like a measely extension has been given the green light with construction to begin in a few months.

I've grown up in this area and was looking forward to seeing Dingley Freeway getting built one day but this looks dim now.

That said, once they build the South Road extension & the other parts of the proposed Dingley freeway, there aren't too many sections left unbuilt - so thus it would not be as expensive to actually build as originally thought.

With the extension, it's rather pathetic the completion date is late 2008 considering it's only a 500 metre extension from Warrigal to Old Dandenong roads, with only two lanes. I call it a waste of money.

The reason VicRoads say is to alleviate traffic using White street to gain access to Frankston Freeway. Well what would be a better idea is to actually build the proposed Mornington Freeway extension between Kingston Road & Springvale Road instead of a stupid extension that no-one will really use anyway apart from easier access to Clayton etc.

The main reason people use White street for access is it is an easy run along the Nepean highway at 80km speeds then using Old Dandenong Road or Springvale Road.

Opinions?

Thank Mr Rupert Hamer for fucking up all the freeway proposals. :bash:

Taking 2 years to build a 500m long two lane road is very pathetic when you take into account that the 6 lane, 40km Eastlink takes only 4 years to build.

I think there mightn't be that much need for a freeway, since the rest of Melbourne gets arterial roads for that purpose. The only difference (possibly) is that Kingston/Heatherton Rd aren't very wide.

The Dingley Fwy seems to duplicate Old Dandenong Rd and Cheltenham Rd in its entireity. There's meant to be a project to widen Cheltenham road so that it's 3+3 lanes instead of 3+2 which is taking an extremely long time too. Queues around Westall, Lower Dandenong, Cheltenham and Springvale Roads get very long though.

Great views guys. There is too much congestion around those areas as invincible mentioned & Warrigal road too, the Dingley fwy obviously would carry freight movements between Dandenong & Moorabbin as well as commercial so I don't see why they don't want to build it now considering there isn't much left to build (of it).

Rupert Hamer eh? Never heard of the bloke but like the rest of the Government, probably useless as the proverbial on a bull.

South Road Extension Package

The South Road Extension Package is a package of road improvement works in the City of Kingston. The Package includes:

The extension of South Road from Warrigal Road to Old Dandenong Road;
Improvement works to the Warrigal Road / South Road intersection;
Improvement works on Old Dandenong Road;
Measures to reduce traffic volumes on White Street, Mordialloc.

Start Date: Mid 2006
Completion Date: Late 2008
Cost: $24.5 million funded by the State Government
Contractor: Contract to be awarded in the second quarter of 2006

Please note that these are approximate timeframes only as the project is still in the early stages of planning.

Features

South Road Extension
South Road will be extended as a two lane road (one lane in each direction) east from Warrigal Road through to Old Dandenong Road. The existing South Road / Warrigal Road T-intersection will be converted into a crossroad intersection. Other operational intersection improvements will be provided including designated turning facility lanes on Warrigal Road. This will enable north-south traffic on Warrigal Road to safely turn into the South Road Extension.

It is intended that Old Dandenong Road between Warrigal Road and Bourke Road will be closed south of Bourke Road. Local access from Warrigal Road will be retained for residents and businesses on this section of Old Dandenong Road, however through traffic will be redirected onto the South Road Extension. The connection to Bourke Road, which will be north of the South Road / Old Dandenong Road intersection, will be retained.

Noise walls will be provided to attenuate noise for residential properties on the north side of the South Road Extension. An off-road bicycle path will be constructed for the length of the extension consistent with its future role as part of the Principal Bicycle Network.

White Street, Mordialloc
VicRoads will be working with the City of Kingston and local stakeholders to reduce east-west through traffic in White Street by encouraging the use of the South Road Extension/Old Dandenong Road route.

Traffic calming measures in White Street are under consideration and VicRoads will work with the local community to seek feedback on the issues associated with the traffic volumes in White Street.

They are bluffing if they think people will use the road to travel to Frankston instead of 80km runs down Nepean then a quick run through White Street > Wells Road.

Old Dandenong Road is alright, but can get slow & is usually littered with speed cameras and police radar.

Dingley bypass & Mornington Peninsula Fwy (North connection) are essential for satisfactory traffic flow.
